Act Raiser

One of a kind

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Enix

Year: 1991

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Has two distinct styles - action platformer and top-down city building Gameplay is greater than the sum of its parts. Platformer gameplay is tight if a little stiff - gotta take your time Hitboxes all make sense unlike the sequel Big sweeping sword makes it easy to hit all enemies both high and low - no cheap hits here. Excellent controls in the top-down levels. Enormous grid makes it easy to target your god-like attacks.

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

Great level design - lots of variety and very notable and memorable stages. RTS levels are fun diversions and make the game an unforgettable experience.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Narrative is affecting with small scale concerns of the people - pretty deep spiritual stuff that somehow got the greenlight from Nintendo's censors

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Simple but timeless graphics

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Best soundtrack on the system bar none
