NHL '94 for Sega CD

Image
Review #12084 NHL '94 Now with more loading Sega CD 1993 EA Sports Sports Sports › Hockey D 77 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Plays exactly the same as the Genesis version, just with more logos and longer load times. Slippery gameplay but easier passing and checking. Fast paced gameplay as a result. Excellent framerate and overall faster movement. Fun as a multi-player game. Not NHL Hitz 20-02 fun, but pretty good as a party game. AI is smart and they even pull the goalie if they're down at the end. 4 / 5 Level Design Same as 93 but with a shootout mode added. 3 / 5 Theme Same as the Genesis version. More sound bits added. 4 / 5 Art Style ...

ESPN National Hockey Night for Sega CD

Image
Review #12036 ESPN National Hockey Night Turn off the videos Sega CD 1994 Sony Imagesoft Sports Sports › Hockey F 58 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Tons of video on menus and before games. By detault oyu also get a video after every big check and score during gameplay. This results in a 20-30 second break in the action that absolutely destroys the flow of the game. Thankfully, this can be turned off. Movement is slow but the arena is large. No performance improvement over the Genesis version. Unfortunately the AI is bad. Opponents mostly stay away from you, at least on the beginner difficulty. Your teammates stand around and don't do much. Opponents skate around forever. I felt like I never had possession. The only way to dispossess i...

Super Hockey '94 for SFC

Image
Review #2364 Super Hockey '94 The easiest sports game ever SFC 1994 Sunsoft Sports Sports › Hockey G 42 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay By far the easiest sports game I've ever played. I won the first game I played by a score of 15-0. And that was phoning it in for most of the last minute. It was insanely easy to score. Nearly every shot I took would go in. The only exception was in the 2nd period while going down, in which case their goalie was a completely different person and stopped every shot. The AI was so stupid that it would never go towards the puck. Defenders would almost completely ignore me and when the puck was free I was the only one moving towards it. And when they had possession they would just make a beeline for my goal and shoot. ...

TV Sports Hockey for TurboGrafx-16

Image
Review #7086 TV Sports Hockey Easily the best (and worst) hockey game on the TG-16 TG-16 1991 NEC Sports Sports › Hockey H 34 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Slow, difficult movement. Actually, skating in a straight line works fine but lateral movement is stilted. It's not terrible, but not fluid either. Shooting is done by holding down the button which causes a moving cursor to appear in the goal. You shoot by releasing the button when the cursor is where you want it. Sometimes this initiates a cutscene showing the goalie block the shot. Other times the puck just goes in. Passing is impossible so there's no point in trying. Defense is weird - pressing II switches to the nearest player and I does nothing, so far as I can tell. Basically you ...

Hit the Ice for TurboGrafx-16

Image
Review #7039 Hit the Ice NBA Jam: On Ice TG-16 1992 TTI Sports Sports › Hockey H 26 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay 2v2 arcade hockey. Much better framerate than the SNES or Genesis versions. This is the definitive version for sure. It's playable, but painfully slow and boring. Imagine NBA Jam at 1/4 speed. I like the two button controls, but there's no depth. AI is incredibly stupid. Your teammate is always an AI so it's basically 2v1. 1 / 5 Level Design Exhibition and tournament modes. But only 2v2. 3 / 5 Theme I love the idea of NBA Jam on ice 3 / 5 Art Style Sprites are much smaller than the SNES version but they animate far b...

Wayne Gretzky and the NHLPA All-Stars for Genesis

Image
Review #4661 Wayne Gretzky and the NHLPA All-Stars The NHL 94 alternative Genesis 1995 Time Warner Sports Sports › Hockey F 55 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay You can turn off "real skate" to make movement different. Oddly, off feels more slippery than on does. Fast movement. Really really fast when real skate is off. Unlike the SNES version, scoring is rare. I played a full twenty minutes with no goals. Uggh Teammates are stupid - they never pass the blue line. Side view. I think I prefer that in hockey games. 4 / 5 Level Design 3 on 3 mode. Includes a Just Play option to jump into a game. Respects your time! Lots of options and they can all be toggled at any time during a game. ...

Tecmo Super Hockey for Genesis

Image
Review #4593 Tecmo Super Hockey The one with homoerotic faceoffs Genesis 1994 Tecmo Sports Sports › Hockey F 56 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Weird, stilted movement. Players kind of run into each other and stay there. Feels like a little league game where kids all flock to the puck and slash at it with little effect. Movement is a lot better with open space. Hard to complete a pass. The puck doesn't always go where you want it to. Shooting often has a long animation, but it's not terrible again because opponents aren't very good at dispossessing you. Overall the game plays slowly but not terrible. This saving grace is that scoring is actually possible with one timers or just a good shot. 3 / 5 ...

NHLPA Hockey '93 for Genesis

Image
Review #4399 NHLPA Hockey '93 Plays better than the SNES version Genesis 1992 Electronic Arts Sports Sports › Hockey G 48 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Very slow movement, but great framerate, especially when compared with the SNES version. I know it's hockey but the slippery movement is a major turnoff. Can't these guys make even slightly sharper turns? B passes and C shoots. On defense B selects the nearest defender and C checks, but it only works 5% of the time. It's nearly impossible to dispossess the pick and if you do you accidentally shoot the pick because you're mashing C. Really hard to score. I know that's hockey for you, but it's not terribly fun. No idea how to set up a scoring play. I like that you can tur...

NHL All-Star Hockey '95 for Genesis

Image
Review #4397 NHL All-Star Hockey '95 Genesis 1995 Sega Sports Sports › Hockey H 38 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Fast movement. Ok passing. Slow shooting. Same problem as most of these games...it's impossible to score. 2 / 5 Level Design No difficulty levels or other interesting customizations. Same modes as everyone else 2 / 5 Theme NHL & NHLPA licenses Not much of an identity. 1 / 5 Art Style Looks ok in pictures but in motion it looks drilled and awkward. Menus and title screen are putrid. Dithering everywhere. 2 / 5 Audio More Genesis reviews Browse all reviews

NHL 98 for Genesis

Image
Review #4396 NHL 98 Roster update of 97 Genesis 1997 Electronic Arts Sports Sports › Hockey F 52 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Lazy roster update of 97. Exact same game. 3 / 5 Level Design 3 / 5 Theme 4 / 5 Art Style 3 / 5 Audio More Genesis reviews Browse all reviews

NHL Hockey for Genesis

Image
Review #4398 NHL Hockey Genesis 1991 Electronic Arts Sports Sports › Hockey H 37 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Very very slow gameplay. The beginnings are here but passes and especially spots move so slowly that there's no way to get a one timer. The only possible way to score is to skate straight to the goal on a breakaway and for point blank. Even then it's rarely successful but sometimes is better than never. 2 / 5 Level Design 3 / 5 Theme 2 / 5 Art Style 0 / 5 Audio Terrible sound. The crowd sounds like radio static. When the crowd gets excited after a short it sounds like a stampede of elephants. Truly...

NHL 97 for Genesis

Image
Review #4395 NHL 97 Roster update Genesis 1996 Electronic Arts Sports Sports › Hockey E 62 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Same engine as 96, although it's slightly easier to check an opponent 3 / 5 Level Design Exhibition, Season and Practice 3 / 5 Theme Roster update. Same old same old. 4 / 5 Art Style Framerate is improved. Looks pretty good 3 / 5 Audio Nice music. The menu plays "are you ready for this" More Genesis reviews Browse all reviews

NHL 95 for Genesis

Image
Review #4393 NHL 95 The one with a player editor Genesis 1994 Electronic Arts Sports Sports › Hockey F 59 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Plays about the same as 94, but perhaps a little slower and more difficult. I think it's because opponents dispossess the pick from you more easily. 3 / 5 Level Design Adds a whole bunch of practice and player creation modes. The core game isn't better and tournaments appear to be gone. 2 / 5 Theme The menus and game intros take a huge step back. In fact there are now 90 seconds of unskippable logos to open the game. Uggh 3 / 5 Art Style The sprites are taller but have worse animation. The fr...

NHL 96 for Genesis

Image
Review #4394 NHL 96 Can't score or check Genesis 1995 Electronic Arts Sports Sports › Hockey F 50 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Plays like 93. Can't check anyone, so defense is impossible. Plays too fast. Your player flies around the rink - very hard to control. Scoring is impossible. 3 / 5 Level Design Same as 95. 3 / 5 Theme Good presentation. The loud menus are a bit much for me. I prefer the guy at the desk. 3 / 5 Art Style Great animation and artwork but the framerate takes a hit 3 / 5 Audio Adds some voice samples. Extra jazzy menu music. More Genesis reviews ...

NHL 94 for Genesis

Image
Review #4392 NHL 94 The one where you can score Genesis 1993 Electronic Arts Sports Sports › Hockey D 79 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Same slippery gameplay but easier passing and checking actually works this time. 3 / 5 Theme Added NHL license. Also added the guy at a newsdesk giving a brief prior to the game. 4 / 5 Art Style Looks great. Excellen...

Mutant League Hockey for Genesis

Image
Review #4369 Mutant League Hockey The better of the two Mutant League games Genesis 1994 Electronic Arts Sports Sports › Hockey E 63 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Plays a bit slower than the NHL games, bit very similar to them. Opponents don't swarm to you. Thankfully. It's possible to pass the puck around and skate around. The gimmick is random environmental hazards that will kill you or your opponent. This puts you in a temporary power play. It's novel and a nice change of pace from the regular hockey games. 3 / 5 Level Design Exhibition and season modes. Settings dial up or down the environmental hazards. 4 / 5 Theme I'm not sure why there...

Mario Lemieux Hockey for Genesis

Image
Review #4331 Mario Lemieux Hockey Ice Hockey, minus the NES Max controller Genesis 1992 Sega Sports Sports › Hockey F 53 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Plays a lot like Ice Hockey for the NES. Squat little hockey players race around the ice quickly. Although your movement feels fairly slow. Passing is easy although opponents intercept passes frequently. Shooting takes too long. The AI is weird. Players pick a spot and then circle around until something changes. It looks really weird and is a bit distracting. It makes it hard to pass or set up plays cuz everyone is always moving. Overall, it's a fun little game. 3 / 5 Level Design There's a fair amount of settings you can change like turning on o...

Hit the Ice for Genesis

Image
Review #4251 Hit the Ice NBA Jam: On Ice Genesis 1993 Taito Sports Sports › Hockey X 12 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay 2v2 arcade hockey. In principle this sounds great but the performance is horrible. Embarrassingly bad framerate. This is nearly unplayable. Thankfully you can adjust the game speed, something unavailable in the SNES version. It's still very slow. I like the two button controls, but there's no depth. AI is incredibly stupid. Your teammate is always an AI so it's basically 2v1. Impossible to score. 1 / 5 Level Design It's an arcade game so yeah, just exhibition. 3 / 5 Theme I love the idea of NBA Jam on ice. 1 /...

ESPN National Hockey Night for Genesis

Image
Review #4175 ESPN National Hockey Night An NHL 94 challenger Genesis 1994 Sony Imagesoft Sports Sports › Hockey F 58 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Not too shabby. Movement is slow but the arena is large so it's easy to set up a play on offense. Unfortunately the AI is bad. Opponents mostly stay away from you, at least on the beginner difficulty. Your teammates stand around and don't do much. Pass and shoot are quick. No long animations here. Passing works well. Extra button for a flip on offense and a poke on defense. Seem unnecessary. 3 / 5 Level Design All the usual modes. A side or a vertical camera view. There's no crowd in vertical mode. Difficult levels and you can disable penalt...

Brett Hull Hockey '95 for Genesis

Image
Review #4076 Brett Hull Hockey '95 No pass Genesis 1994 Accolade Sports Sports › Hockey H 37 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Slow movement and long animations. Teammates and opponents are morons. They barely move. Passing is impossible so the best strategy is to get the puck, Make a beeline for the net, and take a shot. Every fifth or 6th shot goes in. Isometric view. 3 / 5 Level Design All the modes you could want. 2 / 5 Theme NHL and NHLPA license, but all players are just a number. 3 / 5 Art Style Not a fan of the isometric view. The camera is too low. Sprites are detailed and animate slowly but look good. The field and stands look like a...
