Andre Panza Kick Boxing for PCE CD

Image
Review #11005 Andre Panza Kick Boxing PCE CD 1992 NEC Fighting Fighting › Boxing X 19 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Cut and paste from the TG-16 version. The game is identical in every way to the that HuCard version. 0 / 5 Level Design 1 / 5 Theme 2 / 5 Art Style 2 / 5 Audio The menu music is slightly higher quality than the HuCard version, but it's barely noticeable. The matches still have no music. More PCE CD reviews Browse all reviews

Digital Champ: Battle Boxing for PCE

Image
Review #8030 Digital Champ: Battle Boxing PCE 1989 Naxat Soft Fighting Fighting › Boxing H 29 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay View is first person, almost like Punch Out. Blocking is pointless and overly difficult as well. you cna powerup a punch but these never connect. Instead, the only reliable way of ever getting in a lick is to throw a never-ending series of jabs by either mashing, or better yet, using turbo, on I (left jab) or II (right jab). In fact, I made it through two fights this way. Just holding down on one or the other button. It took 5 or so boring rounds to take out my opponent, but it eventually happened. Terrible 1 / 5 Level Design The are no modes. Just jump right in. And every fight seems to play out the ...

Bullfight Ring no Hasha for PCE

Image
Review #8015 Bullfight Ring no Hasha Kung Fu on the street, Boxing in the ring PCE 1989 Cream Fighting Fighting › Boxing H 38 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay It's got two distinct modes - a beat 'em up section like Kung-Fu Master, followed by a boxing match. Both are sidescrollers, and can be easily cheesed. In the beat 'em up sections you can crouch to deliver low kicks, just like in Kung-Fu Master (Kung Fu on the NES), and in the ring you can simply mash II to deliver a rapid series of long jabs. In both cases your opponents can't reach you so you'll easily defeat all comers. Outside of the ring you can punch, kick, and jump, but you can't jump and attack, so it's only good for avoiding projectiles. The controls are...

Ring ni Kakero for SFC

Image
Review #2290 Ring ni Kakero Boxing as a visual novel SFC 1998 Masaya Fighting Fighting › Boxing H 32 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay There's...not much to this game. At first glance it looks like you can move freely around The ring to attack your opponent, but looks are deceiving. Instead, you hit the R button a few times to gain some points and then hit one of the face buttons to initiate a cutscene. Then you just hold to the right and if you started holding right before the computer did you'll win a confrontation. Your opponent can initiate a similar cutscene and again if you hold right before they do you, you'll win and not take any damage. So all you do in this game to win a match is score a couple of hits, initiate a cutscene, and aft...

Onizuka Katsuya Super Virtual Boxing for SFC

Image
Review #2258 Onizuka Katsuya Super Virtual Boxing What are the controls? SFC 1993 SOFEL Fighting Fighting › Boxing E 60 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Plays a lot like Punch-Out. You can throw jabs, hooks, uppercuts, and body shots, although the controls eat inputs like crazy. It's extremely difficult to throw what you want. And it feels completely random whether it will hit. It's a button masher, but kind of fun. 2 / 5 Level Design There are no modes. You can choose between 6 opponents and tackle them in any order you want, but there isn't a practice mode for the weird controls. This game would greatly benefit from a way to practice. Every fight is the same, with the fighters having only s...

Ashita no Joe for SFC

Image
Review #2014 Ashita no Joe Glass Joe's backstory SFC 1992 K Amusement Leasing Fighting Fighting › Boxing G 46 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Mash A. The objective is to score a TKO by reducing your opponent's health bar three times. You've got a few punches but all are executed with the A button. Pressing A with a direction on the d-pad unleashes an upppercut or hook but the range on these attacks is so short that they're nearly impossible to land. Besides, there's no stamina to worry about so you can just keep mashing away on A to throw your long-reaching jab. This doesn't guarantee success since the hit detection is so awful. Your opponent can often just walk right through your jabs and get close enough to throw a more power...

Champions Forever Boxing for TurboGrafx-16

Image
Review #7016 Champions Forever Boxing The boxing sim TG-16 1991 NEC Fighting Fighting › Boxing H 26 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Plays a bit like a brawler. You move around within a 3D arena. The II button punches and I doesn't do anything, as near as I can tell. Punching reduces your strength meter while taking punches lowers your stamina. For the love of Pete I can't figure out how to wear down my opponent. Punching him seems to have no effect on either meter while my strength goes down when I punch or he punches me. There must be a strategy or hidden controls that escape me. In any case this seems to be a simulation style boxing game. No thanks 1 / 5 Level Design Exhibition and career mode, which is ju...

Toughman Contest for Genesis

Image
Review #4621 Toughman Contest Genesis 1995 Electronic Arts Fighting Fighting › Boxing H 27 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Takes a behind the fighter view with you as a green ghost looking thing, like the original Punch Out arcade. It's distracting to say the least. Your opponent attacks so quickly that there's no way to block what he's doing and react to it. The controls are too laggy to do any good either. I'm calling this game nearly unplayable, just like that George Foreman game. 1 / 5 Level Design Exhibition and tournament No difficulty levels 2 / 5 Theme I vaguely remember the Toughman Contest and the Butterbean character who is on the title screen for this one...

Muhammad Ali Heavyweight Boxing for Genesis

Image
Review #4366 Muhammad Ali Heavyweight Boxing Float like a butterfly, stink like all the other boxing games Genesis 1992 Virgin Fighting Fighting › Boxing H 36 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay As shallow as most of these boxing titles, but it moves slowly enough that you can at least try blocking or moving around the ring. You have two punchs - a weak jab or a strong and slow punch. Just mash on the jab. Spend more time waiting for your stamina to recharge than actually fighting. Not much fun. Still, it's at least playable whihc is more than I can say about a few of these other boxing titles. 1 / 5 Level Design Exhibition and tournament No difficulty levels 1 / 5 Theme Muhammad...

James "Buster" Douglas Knock Out Boxing for Genesis

Image
Review #4267 James "Buster" Douglas Knock Out Boxing Somebody missed legs day Genesis 1990 Sega Fighting Fighting › Boxing X 14 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Played from the side like a fighting game. The ultimate button masher. There are a few moves like the ability to jump backward but honestly you just have to hold right and jam on A until the other guy goes down. I guess it's technically responsive so I'll throw it a bone. 0 / 5 Level Design Just exhibition 0 / 5 Theme I don't know much about boxing but I do know that Buster Douglas is the worst champion of all time. Not much else to say. 1 / 5 Art Style ...

Greatest Heavyweights for Genesis

Image
Review #4235 Greatest Heavyweights Roster update of Evander Holyfield boxing Genesis 1993 Sega Fighting Fighting › Boxing G 49 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay When fighting a good opponent I can't land a punch for the life of me. The opponent just pummels me. Left right up and down. Uggh I hate boxing games. Just a button masher 2 / 5 Level Design Exhibition, career, tournament 3 / 5 Theme Having the greats is fun. Good presentation like a replay where the POG becomes a snapshot which is shown in a newspaper clipping. Pretty cool. It's still boxing but this is well done. 4 / 5 Art Style Same graphics as the Holyfield game. Maybe a slight imp...

George Foreman's KO Boxing for Genesis

Image
Review #4224 George Foreman's KO Boxing Georg Foreman's Punch Out Genesis 1993 Flying Edge Fighting Fighting › Boxing X 7 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Tries to play like Mike Tyson's Punch Out but lacks anything resembling the nuance that that game had. No amount of hitting does enough to knock the other guy down. No real point in blocking either since the opponent just attacks relentlessly. Two buttons, one for each arm. Dodge R or L and block by pressing up. That's it. 0 / 5 Level Design Only one mode and no difficulty levels. 1 / 5 Theme Boxing. George Foreman 1 / 5 Art Style Some of the ugliest sprites I...

Foreman For Real Boxing for Genesis

Image
Review #4206 Foreman For Real Boxing Uncanny Valley Genesis 1995 Acclaim Fighting Fighting › Boxing X 18 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Two buttons. Right and Left. No other buttons or controls that I can figure out. Just the two punches. So...the gameplay, such as it is, is incredibly shallow. Punches rarely connect and it feels completely random. 2 / 5 Level Design Lots of options for difficulty and such. Career, tourney, and exhibition modes. Not sure why anyone would want to play this for longer than a few minutes but it gives you lots of ways to do just that. 0 / 5 Theme It's boxing. And fat man George Foreman takes center stage. No thanks Also, you have a...

Evander Holyfield's "Real Deal" Boxing for Genesis

Image
Review #4180 Evander Holyfield's "Real Deal" Boxing Insert ear joke here Genesis 1992 Sega Fighting Fighting › Boxing H 29 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Good luck landing a punch. This is a button masher, plain and simple. No idea how to play this well. 2 / 5 Level Design Exhibition and career 3 / 5 Theme Holyfield is one of the better boxers to get his mug on a Genesis game. Props for picking a stud. Also the presentation is decent with a quick exhibition and boxer selection. 2 / 5 Art Style Distinct effect makes the background crowd rotate as you pan horizontally. It's impressive at first but sort of distracting. It's m...

Boxing: Legends of the Ring for Genesis

Image
Review #4074 Boxing: Legends of the Ring Big boys Genesis 1993 Electro Brain Fighting Fighting › Boxing F 53 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Pretty good boxing sim. You've got all the punches like jabs, hooks, uppercuts. A is your left hand and C is right. Holding Up makes you jab, left/right is hook, and down is uppercut. Block by holding up or down. Gameplay is simple but there's so much animation that happens quickly so it's hard to react. Pretty much just mash. Rounds last FOREVER which I guess is realistic. View is behind your fighter and slight askew to the right so you can see the opponent. Fairly immersive. Not my idea of fun tbh 3 / 5 Level Design Has a career mode where you level...

TKO Super Championship Boxing for SNES

Image
Review #635 TKO Super Championship Boxing An all-alien crowd SNES 1992 SOFEL Fighting Fighting › Boxing G 44 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Move around within the ring, like a wrestling game. Very sluggish movement though. Long load times. Takes 15 seconds before the round starts. Two buttons - one for each arm. No way to block and movement is so slow there's no way to get anywhere else in the ring. Gets boring almost immediately. You get a limited number of punches before you get tired. Like a stamina meter. At first I thought the game was eating inputs but it was part of the game design I guess. Why would anyone play this instead of a 1v1 fighting game like Street Fighter? 2 / 5 Level Design Championship and ex...

Super Punch Out for SNES

Image
Review #584 Super Punch Out Pummeling racial stereotypes since 1994 SNES 1994 Nintendo Fighting Fighting › Boxing D 70 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Herein lies the difference between this and all other boxing games - the name of the game is to recognize and react to visual and auditory patterns. In this way it is more of a puzzle than an action game, per se. Maybe it's a puzzle-action genre? As a result, it feels more like a video game than a simulator, which I appreciate. Still, while I like this game more than other boxing games, I still don't enjoy it like I did the original. The reason is that attacks are hard to read. There's so much animation that it's hard to recognize the patterns with enough time to react. 4 ...

Riddick Bowe Boxing for SNES

Image
Review #459 Riddick Bowe Boxing Chavez - en Ingles SNES 1993 Extreme Fighting Fighting › Boxing H 32 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Side view camera. Arcadey feel. Four punches and either hit high or low. Button masher. Utterly impossible on anything but the lowest difficulty. 2 / 5 Level Design Career mode and exhibition. Just an endless series of boxing matches. 2 / 5 Theme It's boxing. With lots of product placement 3 / 5 Art Style Sprites are caricatures and are all the same model with pallete swaps to give them different skin tones. The faces are also different. They all have either grizzly scowl or a bored look on their face. It loo...
