RDF - Global Conflict for Sega CD

Image
Review #12097 RDF - Global Conflict Tank controls suck even in a tank game Sega CD 1994 Absolute Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech G 45 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay I really want to like this game. Honest I do. It's got a cool atmosphere and great graphics and sound and even some good gameplay elements. But it's not enough. Ultimately it's just a cumbersome tank sim with enemies that are damage sponges and are otherworldly elusive. It's tank warfare at its worst - with your lack of mobility thrust front and center. Such a shame. 3 / 5 Level Design I like what the devs were going for, but I quite frankly couldn't beat the first level. Id like to score it higher but dialing up the difficulty so hig...

Battlecorps for Sega CD

Image
Review #12009 Battlecorps If Joe Cool drove a mech Sega CD 1994 Core Design Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech H 35 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Click up or down to pick a speed and then use left or right to change direction. No strafing so just walk toward your target and absorb whatever they're firing at you. Four or five weapons to choose from. All but the machine gun have limited ammo and no pickups to get more. Shields also seems to deplete and somehow you can regenerate them but I couldn't figure out how. That's the extend of the gameplay. I got bored after 20 mins of the same gameplay loop. 1 / 5 Level Design Never ending levels. No map. Confusing layout with no clear directions. Super easy to ...

Gunboat for TurboGrafx-16

Image
Review #7038 Gunboat Apocalypse Never TG-16 1992 NEC Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech X 5 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay What gameplay? This has to be the worst controls in a video game. The view is first person and you're either a gunner or the boat driver. In either case you use left or right to turn obviously and up or down to move forward or backward and the one button to fire. Movement barely works. In fact, most of the time I don't think it does. You can hold down on left all you like and the game will decide whether or not it does. Anything. Shooting also happens if the game feels like it and I think it's the distance between you and the target that determines if the target is hit but I have no idea. ...

Super Battletank: War in the Gulf for Genesis

Image
Review #4562 Super Battletank: War in the Gulf Desert Wing Commander Genesis 1992 Absolute Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech X 23 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Basically Wing Commander on a 2D plane. Switch to overhead map to navigate to a target and then when you get there take out the tank or copter there. Pretty rudimentary. Controls are terrible due to the controller. Changing speed is done by pressing Start + up or down. This is impossible during combat. 1 / 5 Level Design Gameplay doesn't differ between stages. Only the enemies and their placement changes. 2 / 5 Theme Desert Storm the video game. Nice presentation with a detailed briefing beforehand and a...

SeaQuest DSV for Genesis

Image
Review #4499 SeaQuest DSV Ecco the Dolphin meets MechWarrior Genesis 1994 Black Pearl Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech H 35 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Umm. This is a weird game. It's a mission-based overhead and sideview shooter, I guess. It has some of the worst controls imaginable in this type of game since your craft floats around like a ragdoll and can only shoot the direction you're facing. That means you have to rotate or angle toward your target and you've got no way to avoid incoming attacks since, yaknow, they come straight at you. I need to strafe guys. Oh and did I mention that most of the crafts in the sidevoew stages can only shoot left or right? They can shoot at any angle. The other key problem is that your craft is E...

M-1 Abrams Battle Tank for Genesis

Image
Review #4322 M-1 Abrams Battle Tank MS DOS called. It wants its tank back Genesis 1991 Electronic Arts Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech X 23 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay True simulation. You can change the view between commander, gunner, driver, and cupola. You can also control the turret separate from the rest of the tank. Lots of things you can do, but ultimately it's like all of these games right back to Battlezone - aim and shoot until you're inevitably shot yourself. The key problem with this game is that movement is so incredibly awkward. Driving is an exercise in patience. Steering feels like you're skating on ice. Every steer is an oversteer making it impossible to drive in a straight line. Lining up a shot is t...

Battletech: A Game of Armored Combat for Genesis

Image
Review #4054 Battletech: A Game of Armored Combat Desert Strike in a mech Genesis 1994 Extreme Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech E 61 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Isometric view isn't my favorite but works ok here. The controls take some getting used to and like most isometric games it's hard to aim properly. You have limited ammo and very little health so you're gonna die a lot. Use passwords to turn on invincibility and unlimited ammo. The game is impossible without the cheats since it's not possible to avoid getting hit. Could've been great 3 / 5 Level Design Only 5 levels according to the gamefaqs cheat listI found. I dunno I couldn't beat a single level without the ...

688 Attack Sub for Genesis

Image
Review #4001 688 Attack Sub Hunt for Bored October Genesis 1991 Sega Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech X 7 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay I'll give it credit for trying something different, but this game was very, very, very obviously made for a mouse and keyboard and should never have been ported to a console. 1 / 5 Level Design Ten missions. I guess if you're really into military tactics you might geek out on the scenarios presented here but I was bored to tears. I just want to shoot stuff so watching numbers and dots on a tiny screen isn't my idea of fun. 2 / 5 Theme I love the idea of piloting a sub like on Hunt for Red October or Crimson Tide so th...

Super Battletank 2 for SNES

Image
Review #554 Super Battletank 2 Desert Wing Commander 2 SNES 1994 Absolute Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech G 40 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Same gameplay as the original, for better or worse. Mostly worse. It's fun for about 10 mins and then loses its appeal. One annoyance is that the control are inverted while using theachone gun but normal for the other two weapons. This is super weird and unnecessary. Not fun either. 2 / 5 Level Design Variety added, like a gallery shooter section where tons of copters attack along with bouncing boxes for some reason. This is super awkward since ethe cursor is painfully slow - much slower than the enemies. Despite that edition the levels are otherwise the same as the original...

Super Battletank: War in the Gulf for SNES

Image
Review #553 Super Battletank: War in the Gulf Desert Wing Commander SNES 1993 Absolute Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech H 33 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Basically Wing Commander on a 2D plane. Switch to overhead map to navigate to a target and then when you get there take out the tank or copter there. Pretty rudimentary. Controls are ok but simple like all these early FPS games. The only other controls are Select to switch between shells, machine gun, and a laser guided missile, plus speed up and down. Shallow gameplay wears out its welcome fast. 1 / 5 Level Design Gameplay doesn't differ between stages. Only the enemies and their placement changes. 2 / 5 Theme Desert Sto...

Review #483 SeaQuest DSV Ecco the Dolphin meets MechWarrior SNES 1995 Malibu Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech H 35 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Umm. MechWarrior 3050 for SNES

Image
Review #326 MechWarrior 3050 Desert Strike in a mech SNES 1995 Activision Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech E 61 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Isometric view isn't my favorite but works ok here. Use passwords to turn on invincibility and unlimited ammo. The game is impossible without the cheats since it's not possible to avoid getting hit. MechWarrior for SNES

Image
Review #325 MechWarrior Faceball 2000 with mechs SNES 1993 Activision Simulation Simulation › Tank/mech H 25 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay FPS with limited ammo and no ability to strafe. So, not good. Controls are extremely simple - walk/lumber around with d-pad and shoot with B. A turns on jets so you can awkwardly fly but this make you bounce around uncontrollably. 1 / 5 Level Design All levels play out the same. Rotate until you see a bad guy, mash until he's dead, rotate to find the next one, and so on until they're all dead or you are. Most stages are over in about 5-15 seconds. 2 / 5 Theme Post apocalyptic future with mechs duking it out. You're some sort of a...
