SeaQuest DSV

Ecco the Dolphin meets MechWarrior

Genre: simulation - tank/mech

Publisher: Malibu

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

Umm. This is a weird game. It's a mission-based overhead and sideview shooter, I guess. It has some of the worst controls imaginable in this type of game since your craft floats around like a ragdoll and can only shoot the direction you're facing. That means you have to rotate or angle toward your target and you've got no way to avoid incoming attacks since, yaknow, they come straight at you. I need to strafe guys. Oh and did I mention that most of the crafts in the sidevoew stages can only shoot left or right? They can shoot at any angle. The other key problem is that your craft is ENORMOUS. Seriously, you're so long that you often stretch across 25% of the screen. There is no way to avoid enemy fire. So just to recap: movement is horrible, attacking is ineffective, and defense is near impossible. The only saving grace is that you auto heal so you have to wait around between missions to recover health.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

The short mission-based design is rather appealing in concept but held back by the horrible gameplay. I really wish the controls were halfway decent.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

I vaguely remember the Roy Scheider helmed TV show. As I recall it was basically Star Trek underwater but I never watched an episode. I've got no nostalgia or interest in learning more

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

The overhead sections features impressive animation but the world is drab and boring. The sideview stages are laughably bad. The artwork has little texture to it and looks completely flat. There are exactly three colors used - shades of black, grey, and purple.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Nothing of note. A cinematic track plays continuously. Gets old quickly
