Pro Yakyuu Super League CD for MD CD

Image
Review #12510 Pro Yakyuu Super League CD MD CD 1995 Sega Sports Sports › Baseball G 43 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Hitting is ridiculously difficult. Pitching and fielding are ok, although it's hard to put any movement on your pitches. But yeah, good luck getting a hit. 2 / 5 Level Design Requires a lot of menuing to get into a game. Season and Exhibition modes. Nothing fancy. 3 / 5 Theme Japan League license plus all of their players as well. Lot of Japanese text to contend with. 2 / 5 Art Style Large sprites in the batting/pitching view. Small sprites when fielding. One thing that really bothers me is that after making contact the ball very slowly h...

Egawa Suguru no Super League CD for MD CD

Image
Review #12505 Egawa Suguru no Super League CD Care for some tea? MD CD 1995 Sega Sports Sports › Baseball G 41 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Slow speed, especially when fielding and baserunning. It's as if the game drops to 10 FPS. The transition between pitching to fielding is jaring and doesn't allow you adequate time to field within the infield. Also, fly balls are impossible to catch as you can't tell where your fielders are and they don't move to the ball by default. All movement is up to you. When batting the ball comes at you fast, making it hard to connect. And when pitching it's nearly impossible to place the ball at the right spot. Holding one direction sends the ball clear to that side of the screen. Even careful tapping...

ESPN Baseball Tonight for Sega CD

Image
Review #12035 ESPN Baseball Tonight Good luck getting an out Sega CD 1995 Sony Imagesoft Sports Sports › Baseball H 27 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay View is behind plate and doesn't shift when ball is in play. Impossible to field. Throws travel incredibly slow Enemy AI is incredibly stupid. They never chase down or even throw when you retreat to a base, like if you tried to stretch a double to a triple but bailed and ran back to 2nd. If you have two players on base you can advance them every time and in some cases score one without a throw. Totally stupid Virtually no time to swing so you have to commit almost immediately 1 / 5 Level Design Only exhibition and home run derby modes. No season?! ...

ROM ROM Stadium for PCE CD

Image
Review #11098 ROM ROM Stadium PCE CD 1989 Masaya Sports Sports › Baseball G 46 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay The dumbest AI I've ever seen in a baseball game. It always throws when you attempt a steal, even if that runner is headed toward an occupied base. For example, if you've got runners on 2nd and 3rd you can send the runner on 2nd and the catcher will throw to 3rd. Just then you can send the runner from 3rd to home for an easy free run. Also, if the 3rd baseman fields a ball and a runner is headed from 2nd to 3rd the third baseman will throw the ball to 3rd to get a force at 3rd. Nevermind that no one is there because that's his base! Sheesh. The mechanics aren't a complete mess but hitting is stupid hard due to your swing animation bein...

Pro Yakyuu for PCE CD

Image
Review #11084 Pro Yakyuu Ugly but serviceable PCE CD 1990 Intec Sports Sports › Baseball G 46 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay I could not buy a hit in this game. Pitching and fielding are middling but ok, but hitting is nigh impossible. 3 / 5 Level Design Season and exhibition modes. Easy enough to jump into a game. 3 / 5 Theme English is used on enough menus that it's not a problem. Has a sort of stuffy environment. Japan League license, of course. 2 / 5 Art Style Eh, the graphics are weak. Not terrible, but decent for 1989. Still below average though. 2 / 5 Audio Loud music plays continuously, and changes based...

Pro Yakyuu Super for PCE CD

Review #11085 Pro Yakyuu Super Ugly but more serviceable PCE CD 1992 Intec Sports Sports › Baseball E 66 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay I could see this being my primary baseball game. The controls are nothing special but also work just as you'd expect for a baseball game of this era. 3 / 5 Level Design Practice, season, exhibition, and vs modes. Easy enough to jump into a game. 3 / 5 Theme English is used on enough menus that it's not a problem. Has a sort of stuffy environment. Japan League license, of course. 2 / 5 Art Style Eh, the graphics are weak. Not terrible, but nothing to write home about. 2 / 5 ...

Review #11086 Pro Yakyuu Super '94 Still ugly, with a roster update PCE CD 1994 Intec Sports Sports › Baseball D 71 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Roster update form the previous game. Plays well. 4 / 5 Level Design Practice, season, exhibition, home run contest, and vs modes! Easy enough to jump into a game. 3 / 5 Theme English is used on enough menus that it's not a problem. Has a sort of stuffy environment. Japan League license, of course. 2 / 5 Art Style Eh, the graphics are weak. Not terrible, but nothing to write home about in 1994. Below average for sure. 2 / 5 Audio Loud music plays continuously, a...

Pro Yakyuu World Stadium '91 for PCE

Image
Review #8113 Pro Yakyuu World Stadium '91 Very minor graphical upgrade PCE 1991 Namco Sports Sports › Baseball E 69 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Plays ever so slightly better than the first game. Hits are slightly less common and fielding is improved. Still a nostalgic pick, as this game is nowhere near as deep or impressive as other games. It's pick up and play fun. 3 / 5 Level Design Only exhibition mode, but you can get into a game in only a few button presses, which is always a win in my book. 4 / 5 Theme 3 / 5 Art Style Slight improvements from the first game, including some sprite shading and more frames of animatio...

Pro Yakyuu World Stadium for PCE

Image
Review #8112 Pro Yakyuu World Stadium NES Baseball? Is that you? PCE 1988 Namco Sports Sports › Baseball F 57 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay As much as I love this simple baseball game, this is a few years too old for me. It's simple and plays well, but is easy to cheese it for doubles and triples on nearly every hit. Plus you'll get a hit in at least half your at-bats, which is fun and all, but takes away any semblance of a challenge. It's like playing against your 6 year old brother. Play the later games in the Famista Baseball series instead. 3 / 5 Level Design Only 1P or 2P modes, plus a Watch mode. Why did devs include those things? Everything's in English. 4 / 5 ...

Power League '93 for PCE

Image
Review #8106 Power League '93 World Class Baseball 6 PCE 1993 Hudson Soft Sports Sports › Baseball E 65 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Plays just like the previous game. Still good, not great. Baserunning is fantastic but batting is still so-so. The result of every pitch is predetermined, just like the last three games. 4 / 5 Level Design 3 / 5 Theme Japanese menus like the last few games 3 / 5 Art Style 3 / 5 Audio More PCE reviews Browse all reviews

Power League III for PCE

Image
Review #8109 Power League III Works Class Baseball 3 PCE 1990 Hudson Soft Sports Sports › Baseball E 65 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay What happened? Hitting is now predetermined per pitch. It's far less dynamic and fair. Play the first two games instead. 4 / 5 Level Design 3 / 5 Theme 4 / 5 Art Style 2 / 5 Audio Music is ramped up to a distracting level. The organ player is going nuts. Power League II for PCE

Image
Review #8108 Power League II World Class Baseball 2 PCE 1989 Hudson Soft Sports Sports › Baseball D 79 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Plays just like the first game. Difficulty is ramped up slightly, giving out fewer hits. Still great controls, AI, and everything else. 4 / 5 Level Design So many modes! Again, same as the first game. 3 / 5 Theme Language barrier in this version 4 / 5 Art Style Slight improvement over the first game. Fielding and baserunning looks better since it's isometric rather than directly overhead. 4 / 5 Audio Same as the first game More PCE reviews Browse all reviews...

Naxat Stadium for PCE

Image
Review #8089 Naxat Stadium Pro Yakyuu World Stadium's brother from another mother PCE 1990 Naxat Soft Sports Sports › Baseball D 71 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Looks, plays, and sounds like an updated version of Pro Yakyuu World Stadium. If I didn't know better I'd say this is a sequel in that series. It's simple, nostalgic fun in the vein of NES Baseball and its successors. 3 / 5 Level Design Nothing too deep. Exhibition and Pennant modes, plus an Edit team mode that's usable without knowing Japanese. 4 / 5 Theme Pick up and play. Cute game. When a player is called out they turn into an angel, complete with a halo and white robes. 3 / 5 ...

Kyuukai Douchuuki for MD

Image
Review #6036 Kyuukai Douchuuki Play-by-play courtesy of a Chipmunk high on helium MD 1991 Namco Sports Sports › Baseball G 43 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Hard to hit the ball. Your bat barely reaches to the other side of the plate, even when in the far front side of the batter's box. It's not impossible but feels weird, especially with how much movement pitches can have. Movement in the field and baserunning is very slow and throws are very fast. The whole thing feels a little off in its physics. 3 / 5 Level Design World Tour and Exhibition modes (1P or 2P). Easy to jump into a game. 2 / 5 Theme Feels like it was made for children, by developers who had read about children ...

Chou Kyuukai Miracle Nine for MD

Image
Review #6010 Chou Kyuukai Miracle Nine The Immaculate Inning, every inning MD 1995 Sega Sports Sports › Baseball E 62 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Decent late-gen baseball game with the good, standard controls for pitching and fielding. Hitting and baserunning, on the other hand, are weird. When hitting the view is isometric, making it virtually impossible to see the lateral placement of the ball. There's a huge colored box over the plate that shows whether the ball will come in on the top or bottom of the strike zone. At least I think that's what it indicates. In any case, whether or not you will hit the ball is dependent upon where you are in the batters box and whether the ball is up or down in the zone. You can hold up to po...

Ultra Baseball Jitsumeiban 3 for SFC

Review #2422 Ultra Baseball Jitsumeiban 3 Pro Yakyuu Star, with Ultra teams SFC 1995 Culture Brain Sports Sports › Baseball F 57 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay This title is a mashup of the gameplay from Pro Yakyuu Star, combined with the Ultra teams and their abilities from this Ultra series, know as Super Baseball Simulator in the US. Read my review of Pro Yakyuu Star for my thoughts. 3 / 5 Level Design 4 / 5 Theme The inclusion of the Ultra teams bumps this up a notch. 3 / 5 Art Style 1 / 5 Audio More SFC reviews Browse all reviews
