Battle Ace for PCE SG

Review #9902 Battle Ace After Burner without a machine gun PCE SG 1989 Hudson Soft Shooter Shooter › Corridor H 26 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Looks and plays like After Burner, but with the slowest missiles ever. Enemies come in waves of four and you can only lock onto and fire missiles at up to two of them. The the other button fires your gun but it has no auto-fire. So basically the gameplay amounts to mashing both buttons while avoiding missiles fired at you. It's as tiring and obnoxious as it sounds. I was so done with this game after only the first stage. Oh and did I mention the one shot death and restart at the beginning of the too-long stage? Yeah, no thanks. 1 / 5 Level Design Enemies come in the sam...

Mado King Granzort for PCE SG

Review #9904 Mado King Granzort Mega Man Zero Zero PCE SG 1990 Hudson Soft Action Action › Hack n Slash C 82 / 100 Very Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Feels great. Movement is the right speed, enemies have distinct and predictable patterns, and your weapons have nice reach and power. My only complaint is that you can't attack while moving. You can switch between three mechs - red, green, and blue. Red has a fast sword attack with fantastic arch and reach while green has a gun that does what you'd expect. Blue is completely useless and should never be used and honestly just gets in the way as you switch between red and green. It's a one-hit kill game, which makes it very challenging, but 1-Ups are everywhere. I had 15 or 20 by the time I reached le...

Daimakaimura for PCE SG

Review #9903 Daimakaimura The one where you can shoot up PCE SG 1990 NEC Action Action › Gun E 69 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Stiff controls which are the hallmark of this series. You can shoot upward. Yay 4 / 5 Level Design Design is simple but there are still lots of memorable moments and set pieces. The enemy placement feels extremely cheap here, even more so than in other G&G games. Still good but requires memorization more than reaction. 5 / 5 Theme 3 / 5 Art Style Black background. Love the enemy designs but poor animation and effects take away from the experience. I know it's a product of its time but Super G&...

Aldynes for PCE SG

Review #9901 Aldynes Whatever you do, don't die! PCE SG 1991 Hudson Soft Shooter Shooter › Horizontal F 57 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Initially, over the first couple of stages, I was digging this game. The movement was fine and I started collecting option ships that were quickly making me overpowered. Things were good. But then in stages 3 and beyond I started to loathe my time playing. The main problem was the truly awful weapons and the behavior of those option ships. There are only three weapons and getting a new one is rare, especially in the later levels. In a baffling twist, once powered up, two of the weapons are almost useless. The "spread" shot turns into a laser which bounces and "walks" along walls. If...

1941: Counter Attack for PCE SG

Image
Review #9900 1941: Counter Attack P-38 Lightning in a bottle PCE SG 1991 Hudson Soft Shooter Shooter › Vertical B 86 / 100 Amazing Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Such a tight, great feeling game. It's brutally difficult, but undeniably fun. Powerups and weapons operate the same as 1943 (expire after the timer hits zero) and are much better to collect as well. No more Twinbee bell mechanics!! 5 / 5 Level Design Incredible. Every stage feels unique and features memorable set pieces and dynamics like moving construction cranes, canyon runs, missile bases, etc. So awesome 5 / 5 Theme Such a cool game. Take everything I wrote about 1943 and multiply by 5. 5 / 5 Art St...
