Wrecking Crew '98 for SFC

Image
Review #2432 Wrecking Crew '98 Panel de Pon the Platformer SFC 1998 Nintendo Puzzle Puzzle › Blocks H 35 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Match 3 where you can move rows horizontally. However, the blocks are walls of bricks. In order to use them you must smash them with a hammer, which requires you to run around, jump, and smash them like any good platformer. This takes forever! And moving the rows is just as cumbersome because you have to platform your way to the left side of that row and move it to the right until you're done. You can't move it to the left. In other words, it's Panel de Pon, but with platformer gameplay. Ugh. It's terrible! 2 / 5 Level Design I played the first stage for 15 ...

Super Family Gelände for SFC

Review #2349 Super Family Gelände Where's the Yeti? SFC 1998 Namco Racing Racing › Overhead D 73 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Plays just like SkiFree! Bizarre control scheme. B makes you steers to to the left and down on the dpad steers you right. I would've done the opposite, or just used the dpad. Avoid other skiers and other obstacles to each the bottom of a course. 3 / 5 Level Design Levels include PvE time attack, 1on1 races, and a race against a field of other players. 4 / 5 Theme Just you and a snowy hill. Charming big-headed sprites and colorful cutscenes give the game fun personality. 3 / 5 Art Style Simple overhead graphics. ...

Super Famicom Wars for SFC

Review #2347 Super Famicom Wars The best 16-bit tactics game SFC 1998 Nintendo Strategy Strategy › Turn-based Tactics B 91 / 100 Amazing Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 5 / 5 Gameplay Almost perfect gameplay. It's close enough so I'll round up to a 5 here. I'm an Advance Wars junkie so I knew I'd like this one but I was surprised to see how full-featured it was. The only thing missing is the ability to quickly see the range of a unit, but that's a minor gripe. The outcome of all encounters is consistent, which I LOVE. The first GBA ironed out what few complaints I have, but this one set a solid foundation. Easily my favorite 16-bit tactics title. 4 / 5 Level Design There are a ton of stages, but they tend to all be mirror i...

Rockman & Forte for SFC

Image
Review #2291 Rockman & Forte or Mega Man & Bass, if you prefer SFC 1998 Capcom Action Action › Gun D 78 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Plays like the almost-good Mega Man 7, but with the addition of Forte/Bass, who is almost a cheat code. Almost. He's got a double jump, 8-direction firing, and a rapid fire only mega buster. These additions make him nearly overpowered, of it weren't for his weak attack power. Still, his movement is so much faster and better than Rockman's that it makes for an annoying trade-off when you have to choose the old man. 4 / 5 Level Design As with Mega Man 7, the stages here are nowhere near as interesting as the NES titles or the Mega Man X titles. Your sprite is so enormo...

Ring ni Kakero for SFC

Image
Review #2290 Ring ni Kakero Boxing as a visual novel SFC 1998 Masaya Fighting Fighting › Boxing H 32 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay There's...not much to this game. At first glance it looks like you can move freely around The ring to attack your opponent, but looks are deceiving. Instead, you hit the R button a few times to gain some points and then hit one of the face buttons to initiate a cutscene. Then you just hold to the right and if you started holding right before the computer did you'll win a confrontation. Your opponent can initiate a similar cutscene and again if you hold right before they do you, you'll win and not take any damage. So all you do in this game to win a match is score a couple of hits, initiate a cutscene, and aft...

Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu: Basic Han '98 for SFC

Image
Review #2184 Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu: Basic Han '98 I played all six of these games, I promise! SFC 1998 Konami Sports Sports › Baseball D 77 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay How and why did Konami pump out so many of these Pro Yakyuu games? Six in only four years? Whatever the reason, they're carbon copies of one another. I can't find a single difference between them. 4 / 5 Level Design 3 / 5 Theme 4 / 5 Art Style 3 / 5 Audio More SFC reviews Browse all reviews

Dr. Mario for SFC

Image
Review #2081 Dr. Mario Pop those pills SFC 1998 Nintendo Puzzle Puzzle › Blocks D 79 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Ah Dr. Mario, you're so awesome. So approachable, so customizable, so flexible. All falling blocks games should allow you to turn pieces horizontally, in my opinion, because it allows for so much flexibility in how you play! You can play it how you want and a single misstep doesn't ruin your whole session. Controls are necessarily responsive. If something goes wrong it's entirely your fault. It's so satisfying to set up a bunch of 3-way sets only to drop a whole bunch of pieces in a chain reaction. 4 / 5 Level Design Pick between one-player, two-player, and VS mode. Two very important c...

Frogger for Genesis

Image
Review #4210 Frogger This is it. The last licensed release for the Genesis. Genesis 1998 Majesco Sales Arcade Arcade › N/a X 23 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Jump upward across 5 lanes of alternating lanes traffic and 5 rows of the most confusing river of all time. This game is stupid easy and stupid repetitive. Zero button control. Just use dpad to go up with an occasional sidestep. Gotta hit the bays at the top exactly which is annoying. Not much leeway. Success is a product of patience more than skill 0 / 5 Level Design There's one level. They just add a few more obstacles each time you finish it. 1 / 5 Theme You're a frog. 0 / 5 ...
