Rockman & Forte for SFC

Image: MobyGames

Rockman & Forte

or Mega Man & Bass, if you prefer

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Capcom

Year: 1998

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Plays like the almost-good Mega Man 7, but with the addition of Forte/Bass, who is almost a cheat code. Almost. He's got a double jump, 8-direction firing, and a rapid fire only mega buster. These additions make him nearly overpowered, of it weren't for his weak attack power. Still, his movement is so much faster and better than Rockman's that it makes for an annoying trade-off when you have to choose the old man.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

As with Mega Man 7, the stages here are nowhere near as interesting as the NES titles or the Mega Man X titles. Your sprite is so enormous that the stages have a short ceiling and this can't have too much verticality. Those that do are broken up into multiple screen-height layers. A few Metroidvania features are also added, including shops and hidden items that you must backtrack to earn. I don't like this in my MM games.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Mega Man! The weird anime version that is. And Forte has an annoying 90s 'tude.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

I'm still not wild about the designs but the sprite work is incredible.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Hideous music. Maybe that's a bit strong, but this is NOT Mega Man music. Even the pew pew of the mega buster is just plain wrong.

Overall Score: 78
