Dick Vitale's "Awesome, Baby!" College Hoops

Sega's answer to NCAA Basketball, but without Mode 7

Genre: sports - basketball

Publisher: Time Warner Interactive

Year: 1994

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Looks and plays a bit like NCAA Basketball for the SNES, but runs at 1 FPS and the sprite scaling is so atrocious that you can't tell what's happening anyway. Passes get stolen virtually every time so best bet is to run up the court and shoot. Opponents score everytime. It's impossible to play defense because they only have hitboxes when they're on defense. I dare anyone to complete a full game. This game is unplayable. This easily rivals Bill Walsh on SNES as the worst sports game ever. Play NBA Give n Go instead

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

Exhibition (practice), Playoff (tournament), and 2v2. I think they knew their game sucked and added 2v2 in hopes that it would be more playable and enjoyable. They were wrong but good try guys.

Theme Score: 0

Theme Notes:

The title screen is colorful, well animated, and grabs your attention. The dev must've run out of money after completing the title screen. But seriously, Dick Vitale is your spokesman? The entire reason this game exists is to repeat his three catchphrases over and over? Who thought this was a good idea? It goes without saying that all teams are generic city/state reps.

Art Style Score: 0

Art Style Notes:

Imagine spinning in place wtih your eyes closed and opening them once per second. Nauseating, right? That's this game.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

So bad it's good. Not only does Dick yell constantly but you also get an air guitar playing when a dunk or steal happens. Music cuts in and out randomly from a short list of guitar riffs. Truly bizarre and oddly entertaining.

Overall Score: 2
