TNN Outdoors Bass Tournament '96 for Genesis

Image
Review #4612 TNN Outdoors Bass Tournament '96 Genesis 1996 ASC Games Sports Sports › Fishing X 23 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Easily the best fishing games on the Genesis. That ain't saying much but it's as close to a compliment as I can give it. It's takes the good qualities of the first game and adds a tiny bit of challenge. Still easy to find fish, a bit of a challenge to hook them, and a bit of skill to reel them in. 1 / 5 Level Design Free fishing is the way to go, but yeah there is that mode plus tournaments. Also a half dozen lakes. 0 / 5 Theme Fishing 2 / 5 Art Style Better than the first game but still not...

TNN Bass Tournament of Champions for Genesis

Review #4611 TNN Bass Tournament of Champions The one with a black and white pause screen Genesis 1993 American Softworks Sports Sports › Fishing X 9 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Probably the easiest fishing game. The fish radar clearly shows where the fish are, both while boating and when casting. The fish always bite and just press B to hook them. Then hold A until they're caught. There's virtually no gameplay here. Whereas most fishing games make it nearly impossible to find and catch anything this one makes it stupid easy. I'm not sure which I hate more. 1 / 5 Level Design There's a Free/practice mode, which again is a standard feature in these games. 0 / 5 ...

King Salmon for Genesis

Image
Review #4299 King Salmon Well this is different. Still terrible but different Genesis 1992 Vic Tokai Sports Sports › Fishing X 11 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Different experience than all the bass fishing games, but man is it confusing and frustrating. Instead of puttering around a lake and casting a line, you drag a lure behind your boat and hope that a school of fish runs over it and bites the lure. This happens maybe 5% of the time and both times I hooked a fish I could not reel it in. Not fun in any way, shape or form. 1 / 5 Level Design Reeling in a fish is far more complicated than the bass fishing games. I couldn't get the fish less than 300 ft for my boat before I lost it. Super frustrat...

Review #4046 Bass Masters Classic: Pro Edition Roster update Genesis 1995 Black Pearl Sports Sports › Fishing X 7 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Same game as original I saw a fish once. Bass Masters Classic for Genesis

Image
Review #4045 Bass Masters Classic About as fun as a trapdoor on a canoe Genesis 1994 Black Pearl Sports Sports › Fishing X 7 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Same game as the SNES version. Why would someone play this? I cannot figure out how to get a fish to bite. I wiggles my lure in front of a fish for 10 minutes straight with no response. 1 / 5 Level Design No structure that I can divine. Just cast your lure into any spot in the lake and reel it in and hope you see a fish. Whatever 0 / 5 Theme It's fishing. And this one doubles down on the hill billy caricatures. 1 / 5 Art Style Decent graphics but man the artwork is awful. Th...

TNN Bass Tournament of Champions for SNES

Review #637 TNN Bass Tournament of Champions From the South where sushi is still called bait SNES 1994 American Softworks Sports Sports › Fishing X 13 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay I swear these games are all clones of one another. Everything from the boating to the casting to the tackle box and the UI when you're reeling in a catch. It's all minor variations on the same theme! This one is mid-complexity but very difficult to find any fish. It seems like they're always just a little further away from my lure after casting it. As with all these fishing games, it's just not any fun. The view is top-down. This feels a lot like the Super Black Bass/Bassin' Black Bass games. Oh be prepared for 10 second loading ti...

Super Black Bass for SNES

Image
Review #555 Super Black Bass Reel bad RNG SNES 1993 Hot B Sports Sports › Fishing X 9 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Ok I'm the wrong guy to review fishing games. Is there anything more boring than fishing? How about a video game about fishing? This obviously requires more knowledge about fishing than I have. Controls are simple, but there's precious little gameplay to use them in. Just boat over to a spot with fish, pick a lure, car and hope a fish bites. After it bites there's an unreadable and non intuitive meter that has an arrow moving along an axis for both the fish and the angler (I guess that's me). I just held down on A to reel in the line. Nothing else I did seemed to directly affect the outcome. Actually, ...

Mark Davis the Fishing Master for SNES

Image
Review #318 Mark Davis the Fishing Master Fishing Master...is that an accredited title? SNES 1996 Natsume Sports Sports › Fishing X 11 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Plays a bit like Bass Masters Classic, with a lot of complexity about picking the right lure and rod plus the massive RNG for actually finding, hooking, and reeling in a fish. Me no likey the complexity. No ability to drive your boat around, instead you menu to pick a spot to cast from. This makes it impossible to know where fish are. The other games let you use a depth finder which shows you if there are fish. 1 / 5 Level Design There are about 120 spots to cast from. They are visually different but I don't know if there's any m...

Jimmy Houston's Bass Tournament U.S.A. for SNES

Image
Review #253 Jimmy Houston's Bass Tournament U.S.A. The best of a bad bunch SNES 1995 American Sammy Sports Sports › Fishing X 24 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Miles ahead of Super Black Bass and Bass Masters Classic. Casting, hooking, and reeling in fish is as easy as pie. The challenge here isn't catching fish...it's finding them. Ultimately you just have to wander around the 5 or 6 fishing spots and buzz around the area before you hear your depth finder ping. i got bored after an hour of doing this and wouldn't come back to it but man it's a million times better than those other fishing games. Also, there's no need to pick lures and engines and whatnot. This lack of complexity might be offputting to fishi...

Bassin's Black Bass for SNES

Image
Review #45 Bassin's Black Bass There's a tree stump in a Louisiana swamp with a higher fun factor SNES 1994 Hot B Sports Sports › Fishing X 12 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Ok as a sequel to Super Black Bass this game is far more accessible since they give you a helper who tells you how to play. The first one had no such help. Still, the core gameplay hasn't changed. You still just boat around, cast, and hope a fish bites. This time you have to hook the fish somehow. It's still a mystery to me, even after catching 3 fish. A dull, repetitive, and mindless minigame. 1 / 5 Level Design This time around there are some hazards like reeds and weeds that slow your lure. But that's ab...

Bass Masters Classic for SNES

Image
Review #43 Bass Masters Classic About as fun as a trapdoor on a canoe SNES 1994 Malibu Sports Sports › Fishing X 7 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay It took a whole bunch of save states shenanigans to hook a fishy and even more to reel it in. This is nigh unplayable. The view is weird - rather than top down it's from the perspective of the boat looking at the fish being reeled in. Very strange perspective 1 / 5 Level Design No structure that I can divine. Just cast your lure into any spot in the lake and reel it in and hope you see a fish. Whatever 0 / 5 Theme It's fishing. And this one doubles down on the hill billy caricatures. 1 / 5 ...
