Theme Park for MD CD PAL

Image
Review #12704 Theme Park My kids play this in Roblox MD CD PAL 1995 Domark Strategy Strategy › RTS E 62 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Controls work well despite using a controller. Camera pans when your cursor approaches edge of screen. Placing attractions and whatnot is imprecise due to the isometric perspective but it's manageable. Everything moves fast and frantic. It's like a fast moving SimCity. Build attractions, connect them with walkways and queues, and monitor key indicators which show how successful your design is. Fun One point off for the annoying Loading screens and bloat that comes with it being a CD game. 3 / 5 Level Design I quickly reached a point where I was watching rath...

Syndicate for MD CD PAL

Review #12703 Syndicate Cyberpunk 20XX MD CD PAL 1995 Domark Strategy Strategy › RTS F 53 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay It's unique anyway. Take jobs and bring your team of four Matrix Agent wannabes out to shoot targets and civilians. Plays a bit like GTA mixed with Risk. Lots of in between level management of stats, weapons, taxation of areas conquered. Isometric view 3 / 5 Level Design The levels have varying objectives like kill all baddies or rescue a hostage. Seems like the primary speak. Objectives are hard to understand. Just wander around until the level ends. 4 / 5 Theme Cool cyberpunk setting 3 / 5 Art Style NES qual...

PowerMonger for Sega CD

Image
Review #12091 PowerMonger I'm Populousing my mind Sega CD 1993 Electronic Arts Strategy Strategy › RTS X 5 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Uhh...wut? I literally have no clue what I'm doing here. Teh UI has been rearranged slightly from the Genesis original, but is just as unmanageable. I still can't figure out how to do anything. This game is stupid. 0 / 5 Level Design No idea what to do. This is a horribly designed piece of software. Maybe it's playable with a guide and a mouse on an old DOS PC but it should be banished from memory as soon as possible. 1 / 5 Theme Nameless, featureless swords and sandals sort of setting...I guess. ...

SimEarth for TG-16 CD

Image
Review #10035 SimEarth Geography 101 TG-16 CD 1993 TTI Strategy Strategy › RTS X 24 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay No clear objective. One of those titles where you're constantly out of currency so you can't do much of anything. Stuff is just happening. Zooming in and out of the map is slow which is annoying. Just painfully boring 1 / 5 Level Design At least it let's you play with unlimited energy or three levels of difficulty. I guess that counts as levels. 1 / 5 Theme Booooring. I'd rather get a science lesson from the Magic Schoolbus, thank you very much. 1 / 5 Art Style Videos graphics. NES quality graphic...

Super Metal Crusher for PCE

Image
Review #8133 Super Metal Crusher Robot Wars PCE 1991 Pack-In-Video Strategy Strategy › RTS X 16 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay I'm not sure how to even describe this game. Actually, it's easy to describe, but hard to categorize. It's not much of a game, to be honest, since the only interactivity is when you distribute skill points to your robot. So I guess it's a strategy game. You design a robot by allocating the aforementioned points to various stats like I.Q., Speed, Shield, and Attack Range . After that you watch your little guy fight it out with an opponent. That's it. You just watch a fight until it's over. 0 / 5 Level Design There are two modes - Battle and Practice....

Populous for PCE

Image
Review #8102 Populous I hope you've got a guide PCE 1991 Hudson Soft Strategy Strategy › RTS X 12 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Baffling. Utterly and completely baffling. What in the world am I supposed to do here? Seriously. There are 20 buttons to select but no explanation about any of them. Move your view and cursor around the map to see the landscape but again, nothing seems to do anything. I figured out how to raise or lower the land but that's the only interactivity I could muster. 1 / 5 Level Design I guess it's cool that the landscape is randomized. 3 / 5 Theme I don't mind the God sim motif. And the view is attractive enough with the boo...

Two Tribes: Populous II for MD PAL

Image
Review #6845 Two Tribes: Populous II Flatten out that land MD PAL 1993 Virgin Strategy Strategy › RTS H 29 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Once again the gameplay amounts to raising or lowering the ground. This allows your little minions to build bigger and bigger cities. There's got to be more to it than that, but I couldn't figure out how to do anything else. 2 / 5 Level Design There are two modes - Conquest, where you fight another god, and Custom, where you just play around. 3 / 5 Theme Same old. God sims are cool 3 / 5 Art Style For what it is, it looks decent. The scrolling is faster than I thought it might be, and much better than ...

Cannon Fodder for MD PAL

Image
Review #6806 Cannon Fodder If only I could throw a grenade MD PAL 1995 Virgin Strategy Strategy › RTS G 43 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Read my writeup on the SNES version for what this game should have earned. This version, despite my best efforts, is unplayable. I cannot for the life of me throw a grenade! You're supposed to press A & B but it doens't work! Occassionally it does but by that point I've been mashing the buttons and am standing right on top of where I'm aiming so I kill my squad. I had no problems with this in the SNES version, so I know it's not the controller. This version is just completely busted. 4 / 5 Level Design The strength of this game is a long list of stages. They...

Lord Monarch - Tokoton Sentou Densetsu for MD

Image
Review #6038 Lord Monarch - Tokoton Sentou Densetsu Falcom's RTS MD 1994 Sega Strategy Strategy › RTS B 86 / 100 Amazing Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay One of the most accessible RTS titles I've played. It reminds me a lot of Bad North, for modern consoles. The purpose of the game is to destroy all enemy castles on the map. Your civilization will build itself out automatically, so you can simply go on auto-pilot in the early stages. Eventually, you need to use tactics to limit the growth of your enemy's civilization and to increase your own. The controls aren't explained well but are quite simple. You have two types of units - the King and Pawns. You must highlight a unit, press A, and then move the cursor to a tile and press A again to send the ...

Dyna Brothers for MD

Image
Review #6020 Dyna Brothers Dinos vs Aliens MD 1992 CSK Research Institute Strategy Strategy › RTS F 55 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Not much depth or control. Just spawn units and hope that they can overwhelm and destroy the aliens. You can direct the units where to go but this can only be done one unit at a time and doesn't seem to do much anyway. There are five units - two that eat vegetation to gather resources, two attackers, and one that eats enemy eggs. If you're not careful all your units will die when the vegetation is consumed, so you need to send rain every so often. But honestly all you need to do is mash away at spawning units until the stage finally ends. 3 / 5 Level Design The maps...

Review #3932 Theme Park My kids play this in Roblox SNES PAL 1994 Ocean Strategy Strategy › RTS D 72 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Controls work well despite using a controller. Camera pans when your cursor approached edge off screen. Placing attractions and whatnot is imprecise due to the isometric perspective but it's manageable. Everything moves fast and frantic. It's like a fast moving SimCity. Build attractions, connect them with walkways and queues, and monitor key indicators which show how successful your design is. Fun 3 / 5 Level Design I quickly reacted a point where I was watching rather than building. I didn't get past the first level but I imagine there are lots of scenarios to deal with. ...

Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods for SNES PAL

Image
Review #3921 Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods Flatten out that land SNES PAL 1993 Imagineer Strategy Strategy › RTS X 24 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Once again the gameplay amounts to raising or lowering the ground. This allows your little minions to build bigger and bigger cities. There's got to be more to it than that, but I couldn't figure out how to do anything else. 1 / 5 Level Design Hey, where's the Custom mode from the Genesis version? 3 / 5 Theme Same old. God sims are cool 3 / 5 Art Style For what it is, it looks decent. The scrolling is faster than I thought it might be, and much better than Powe...

PowerMonger for SNES PAL

Image
Review #3923 PowerMonger I'm Populousing my mind SNES PAL 1993 Imagineer Strategy Strategy › RTS X 5 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Uhh...wut? I literally have no clue what I'm doing here. Y cycles between the menu, the viewing area, and the map, and some clock/scale thing. X toggles between the menu and the map for some reason. A and B are the "Close Door" button in an elevator, as in they do nothing. R and L allow you to rotate the map view, which is an improvement over the Genesis version. Notice that none of these buttons actually does anything other than select a different view. That's all I can figure out. This game is stupid. 0 / 5 Level Design No idea what to do. This i...

Cannon Fodder for SNES PAL

Image
Review #3905 Cannon Fodder Advance Wars + Lemmings + Ikari Warriors + Command & Conquer SNES PAL 1994 Virgin Strategy Strategy › RTS D 77 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Movement is accomplished by moving a cursor and pressing A to call your units to that spot, ala Battalion Wars. This is obviously sub-optimal since we don't have a mouse. It's hard to navigate a narrow walkway and easy to get stuck on a corner. It's also very important to get your placement just right lest you throw a grenade into the face of the guy behind you and kill your entire squad. Moving the units directly with the d-pad would've been much better. You've only got two weapons - an unlimited machine gun by holding B or tossing a grenade by pressing both A ...

Mega-Lo-Mania for SFC

Image
Review #2231 Mega-Lo-Mania Ergonomically terrific SFC 1993 Virgin Strategy Strategy › RTS E 66 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Same game as the Genesis original. Looks, sounds, and plays identically. 4 / 5 Level Design 4 / 5 Theme 2 / 5 Art Style 4 / 5 Audio More SFC reviews Browse all reviews

Chaos Seed for SFC

Image
Review #2046 Chaos Seed Feng shui simulator SFC 1996 Taito Strategy Strategy › RTS G 40 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay There's depth and then there's complexity. This game misses the mark completely by having so many layers of complexity and such. I think you'd need a PhD to be able to play it, much less master it. The game features a few different gameplay elements, including action RPG combat, real-time strategy resource mining and unit commands, and turn-based leveling systems. It reminds me a bit of the indie title Moonlighter which mixes up a few different genres into something that isn't as good as it would have been if they had focused on just one of those genres. The gameplay of Chaos Seed is hard to explain. In fact, the game ...

Tyrants: Fight Through Time for Genesis

Image
Review #4636 Tyrants: Fight Through Time Ergonomically terrific Genesis 1993 Virgin Strategy Strategy › RTS E 66 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay The limitations of using a controller are mitigated a bit by moving the cursor from up and down between predetermined spots so you don't have to precisely touch specific places. You only have a handful of things to do, including assigning people to create inventions to be in an army to defend your fort or to mine resources. There's not too much to track which I appreciate. 4 / 5 Level Design The objective is to advance your people as far as you want to take them before you go and destroy the other people on the island. You have multiple islands in a w...
