WireHead for Sega CD

Image
Review #12136 WireHead Inspector Gadget as a "dumb dad" 90s sitcom Sega CD 1995 MGM Interactive FMV FMV › N/a X 17 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay The definition of an interactive movie. You watch a movie and every two or three seconds you're presented with the choice of three directions - up, left and right. Only one choice is correct and will advance the movie while the others result in a game over. So, memorize or use a guide to watch the full movie. There's not else here. Why would someone want to do this? 1 / 5 Level Design There's nothing resembling gameplay or level design. It's a straight up movie with a button press to continue watching it. Still, this is technicall...

Time Gal for Sega CD

Image
Review #12127 Time Gal Turtles in Time, if April was making the time jumps Sega CD 1993 Renovation FMV FMV › N/a G 44 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay The reaction time required is insane, even on Easy. This game is significantly more difficult than Road Avenger or Revenge of the Ninja. It plays just like those games, with all four directions or pressing any face button being the possible choices. I like that the timing isn't precise, so you can mash, just like in Road Avenger. Still, this is a step below the other Wolfteam titles. 2 / 5 Level Design The levels are incredibly short - often only required a handful of inputs. They'er far shorter than the other Wolfteam FMV titles. 4 / 5 T...

Supreme Warrior for Sega CD

Image
Review #12123 Supreme Warrior Little Trouble in Big China Sega CD 1994 Digital Pictures FMV FMV › N/a X 13 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Theoretically this so a one-on-one fighting game, but it's simply an impossible button masher. Like Prize Fighter before it, there's no way to know what to press and how to defend. What a ridiculous waste of time. 0 / 5 Level Design No idea. I couldn't get past the first grunt enemy. 3 / 5 Theme The most generic Chinese fung fu setting ever. A Raiden cosplayer wants to acquire the other half of a powerful mask which will grant him limitless power. So yeah, it's the plot of Kung Fu Panda. 2 / 5 ...

Space Ace for Sega CD

Image
Review #12117 Space Ace Beat that Borf Sega CD 1993 ReadySoft FMV FMV › N/a G 40 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay As far as FMV games go, this isn't half bad. Whereas most of them require your QTE button press to be accurate, isolated, and well-timed, Space Ace allows you to spam all you like. You only need to get the right input in during the short window of time. It doesn't care about any other inputs that were also thrown in there. Unfortunately, the problem is knowing what input to provide. Only about half of them are given a helpful hint, such as a flashing animation and about half of those are shown in a misleading spot. A flash to the lop left can mean either up or left. It's unclear far too often. And some give you very little time to t...

Slam City with Scottie Pippen for Sega CD

Image
Review #12112 Slam City with Scottie Pippen Shaq Fu is not the worst license basketball game Sega CD 1994 Digital Pictures FMV FMV › N/a X 11 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay This is the entire scope of the gameplay: DEFENSE = Randomly press buttons and d-pad OFFENSE = Press A to shoot and hope it goes in That's it. There's no depth, no reliability, no indicator of what will work or not work. This is a game of pure random chance and not skill. Avoid at all costs. 1 / 5 Level Design It's a one-on-one hoops game against one of four opponents. Fingers, Juice, Mad Dog, and one other. Each opponent gets their own CD, hence the 4 disc set! There's no gameplay here, and therefore no var...

Road Avenger for Sega CD

Image
Review #12101 Road Avenger The best FMV game, by far Sega CD 1992 Renovation FMV FMV › N/a D 71 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay The final form of interactive movie...uh...interactivity. It's a series of QTEs, but you can straight up hold down on the button or direction without mashing or getting the timing just right (ala Dragon's Lair). Also, the game gives you enough time for even an old man like me to react in time. At least on Normal difficulty. Button presses come quickly and are intuitive for the most part. You can focus on the movie and know what you're supposed to do. 4 / 5 Level Design The levels themselves are pretty crazy, in a good way, with a steady stream of memorable moments and set pieces. As...

Revenge of the Ninja for Sega CD

Image
Review #12098 Revenge of the Ninja Ninja Dragon's Lair Sega CD 1993 Renovation FMV FMV › N/a E 61 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay It plays like Dragon's Lair, but refined. On Easy you get a clear indicator, just enough time to react, and forgiving timing. In fact, you can mash all you'd like. WolfTeam made the best of these QTE FMV games. 3 / 5 Level Design Good variety of moves and sequences. It's the same every time, but what did you expect? Levels vary in length from 4-20 button presses and give you a chance to catch your breath between them. 4 / 5 Theme You're a ninja assaulting an evil warlord's castle while battling supernatural henchm...

Prize Fighter for Sega CD

Image
Review #12093 Prize Fighter Let's Get Ready to Bumble! Sega CD 1993 Sega FMV FMV › N/a X 9 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay I wish I could award this a negative number. You can throw left and right jabs, hooks, and an uppercut, but you will NEVER connect! There's no rhyme or reason to this nonsense. No indicator of if and when to do anything. Your best bet is to block the entire time until the round ends. What even is this?! 0 / 5 Level Design Who knows? I couldn't win the first bout. 3 / 5 Theme The opening video is great. It introduces you and features a great cast of characters encouraging you. I was ready to go as the bell rings. Even the acting was d...

Night Trap for Sega CD

Image
Review #12085 Night Trap Joe Lieberman's arch nemesis Sega CD 1992 Sega FMV FMV › N/a H 34 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay It took me a while to figure out how to play this game, but once I did I was off to the races. Basically, you pick a camera with A, activate a trap with B (but only when the meter is red), and use C to change an "access code" which cycles at a reliable point. The clock continuously flows, so "playing" this title requires you to memorize or otherwise follow the script. As with most of these FMV titles, its interactivity is contrived and superficial. There's no skill, only wrote memorization. Like that Geography 101 class I took in college. The predictability of the controls make this title more playable ...

NFL's Greatest - San Francisco vs Dallas 1978-1993 for Sega CD

Image
Review #12083 NFL's Greatest - San Francisco vs Dallas 1978-1993 Watch NFL's Greatest Games instead Sega CD 1993 Sega FMV FMV › N/a X 9 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay This is a coaching simulator. You pick the play, hope for the best, and watch the awful video. You can choose from 9 plays. Yes, nine total plays. And for the Niners there's only a single running play. Not that it matters though. It's completely random. You might as well just roll a dice over and over and over again. What a terrible concept. 0 / 5 Level Design The only configuration you can choose is the length of the quarters. There's only a single game with no context for when or where it's played. ...

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for Sega CD

Image
Review #12079 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Mighty morphin reflex tester Sega CD 1994 Sega FMV FMV › N/a X 13 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay An episode of Power Rangers with a constant stream of quick time events. Three difficulty levels. 0 / 5 Level Design Here's the level design: import random def random_button_press(): buttons = ["Up", "Down", "Left", "Right", "A", "B", "C"] return random.choice(buttons) # For a level: Generate 30 random button presses random_presses = [random_button_press() for _ in range(30)] print(random_presses) 1 / 5 Theme I hate everything about the Pow...

Masked Rider, The - Kamen Rider ZO for Sega CD

Image
Review #12074 Masked Rider, The - Kamen Rider ZO A Power Ranger, bugs, and QTEs Sega CD 1994 Sega FMV FMV › N/a X 16 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Follows in the footsteps of Dragon's Lair, with you needing to press a direction or button to continue watching the movie. Miss one and you take damage. Too much damage and you get a game over. I like that there's some leeway here. Still, at the end of the day, it's just a terrible movie that requires quick reflexes to get through the whole thing. The FMV era was a dumb time to live. Then again, the QTE era is still up on us in the mid 2020s. 0 / 5 Level Design 2 / 5 Theme Power Rangers before it was cool. I...

Review #12070 Make My Video - Kris Kross I finally found a zero Sega CD 1992 Sega FMV FMV › N/a X 0 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay No, just no. Make My Video - INXS for Sega CD

Image
Review #12069 Make My Video - INXS Baby, Don't Cry Sega CD 1992 Sega FMV FMV › N/a X 2 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Editing a music video is far and away the dumbest concept for a piece of interactive media of all time. Listen to a song, splice together a video, watch your entire video, and then receive a grade with no explanation for how they're grading you. That's it. I wish I could give this a negative score. 0 / 5 Level Design You've got a three songs to choose from and three sets of random videos to pick for your editing by pressing A, B, or C. 0 / 5 Theme A couple of girls at a pool hall are being hit on by a couple of stoners. The girls wi...

Lawnmower Man for Sega CD

Image
Review #12059 Lawnmower Man Pierce Brosnan in VR Sega CD 1994 SCi FMV FMV › N/a X 21 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay The game presents a series of 12 different minigames. Based on the walkthrough, there are 24 total stages per playthrough, with some of the minigames being repeated up to five times. Most amount to standard QTE segments, while others include games of Memory, spot the difference, and digital pachinko. In all cases, the interface may as well be a TV remote. It's more engaging than many FMV titles, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. 2 / 5 Level Design As I mentioned the game is made of 24 stages. Most playthroughs are unique, as only some of the stages have multiple possible see...

Kids on Site for Sega CD

Image
Review #12058 Kids on Site Dorf on Construction Site Sega CD 1994 Digital Pictures FMV FMV › N/a H 39 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Perhaps the only FMV title which achieved what it set out to do. Choose from one of four construction vehicles (steamroller, excavator, wrecking ball, and bulldozer) and press B to operate the vehicle (i.e. watch a video) or A or C to cycle through three other targets. Not much to it, but you can't make a mistake so kids won't have any trouble seeing all the videos. 1 / 5 Level Design This is essentially a 30 minute slapstick comedy video involving construction equipment that's made for kids. The four levels can be chosen in whatever order you wish and all play out identic...

Fahrenheit for Sega CD

Image
Review #12041 Fahrenheit Flame On Sega CD 1995 Sega FMV FMV › N/a H 34 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Every few seconds you're given a choice to pick a direction to go. The gameplay amounts to simply making a choice and hoping that you have enough air to survive. It's extremely simple and the game gives you a good amount of time to make your choice. As far as interactive movies go, this is about as good as it gets. 2 / 5 Level Design This is about as good as it gets for this genre. Lots of choices - not all which are bad. The levels are long without a ton of repetition. 4 / 5 Theme Some of the best acting in an FMV title. Intense firefighting scenes throughout. ...
