Moto Roader MC for PCE CD

Image
Review #11072 Moto Roader MC Super Sprint & Rocket League PCE CD 1992 Masaya Racing Racing › Isometric E 61 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Super Sprint clone, and a good one. I so wish I could play this with 4 other people! That would be a killer party. Underwhelming as a racing game, but as a party game? Mmwah, chef's kiss. Extremely slippery controls which can be made even worse from the Config page. You can also toggle on or off collision between cars (turn off!) or the missile and bomb weapons. Speaking of the weapons, this is my chief complaint. The control scheme makes no sense for a two button controller since your two weapons are binded to your gas and reverse buttons. And by the way, why is there a reverse button anywa...

Hanna Barbera's Turbo Toons for SNES PAL

Image
Review #3911 Hanna Barbera's Turbo Toons Heavens to Murgatroyd! Exit, stage left. SNES PAL 1994 Empire Interactive Racing Racing › Isometric G 46 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Plays like Super Sprint or Super Off Road but you're one of six Hanna Barbera characters running around. Controls are static such that up is always up. Steering is initially very loose but in League mode you can power up your stats by collecting gems in-race and spending them on stats for acceleration, speed, grip, and turbo. After only a single race you can steamroll the competition so badly that the only real challenge is avoiding racers as you lap them. The only thing you can do besides running around and collecting gems is to jump. If you hit another racer they will spi...

Hashire Hebereke for SFC

Image
Review #2145 Hashire Hebereke The cutest yet hardest racing game ever made SFC 1994 Sunsoft Racing Racing › Isometric G 40 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay The game controls like RC Pro-Am were left always rotates to the players left. You can change this to the direction. Always going the way that you see it on the screen. This is a nice addition but doesn't change the fact that the controls are awful. When you're going straight, the turns work fine and you can make even sharp turns okay. You skid around the corners so it's almost like drifting. The problem is that when you bounce into a wall or another player in particular you get thrown across the map and all momentum is stopped and that's it for the race. There is no recovery from even t...

Battle Cross for SFC

Image
Review #2019 Battle Cross Super Sprint meets Bomberman SFC 1994 Imagineer Racing Racing › Isometric E 61 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Plays like Atari's Super Sprint and Badlands or Tecmo's Super Off-Road. Everyone's riding a hover bike, and the bikes move quickly compared to those games. This makes turning difficult, but you pinball off of walls when crashing into them so the quickest way take a corner is by smashing into the wall. Consequently it feels very different than other isometric racing games. You can pick up power-ups like a laser gun and rockets and other Mario Kart like weapons. Although it's hard to hit the other players. You can also jump. The only mode in the game, aside from a test drive mode, is a...

Super Off Road for Genesis

Image
Review #4568 Super Off Road Play the SNES instead Genesis 1992 Ballistic Racing Racing › Isometric F 51 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay What a difference a controller makes. Whereas the controls on the SNES version were incredibly tight, here they're slow and unforgiving. Not having the L/R buttons completely nerfs the controls. For some reason this game plays about 3/4 speed compared to the SNES or arcade. 4 / 5 Level Design So much variety in the tracks. They each fit in one screen but there are so many creative choices, like without walls, with pillars, a huge sandy hill to drive along. Every track feels unique and even has a name. After you've seen them all you then go backwards on each. Very ...

Rock 'n Roll Racing for Genesis

Image
Review #4485 Rock 'n Roll Racing R.C. Pro-Am. With rock & roll Genesis 1994 Interplay Racing Racing › Isometric F 53 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay RPM Racing at double speed and with classic rock songs playing. Still the same ho hum gameplay, just a faster speed. Controls well enough although the core gameplay is a bit boring. Takes forever to make enough money to buy stuff to upgrade your car. 2 / 5 Level Design Fairly boring track designs. This time they're littered with armor and money ala Super Sprint but there are no features or obstacles in the mostly square tracks. Beyond being a series of right angles the tracks all look about the same. Some variety would've been nice. Only one...

Championship Pro-Am for Genesis

Image
Review #4101 Championship Pro-Am Remaster of OG R.C. Pro-Am Genesis 1992 Tradewest Racing Racing › Isometric E 61 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Exact same gameplay as the NES original, but with a slightly faster speed and stickier tires. Still fun for a few minutes of play. However, just like the original, the difficulty ramps up after only a few races and then I wish you luck. Rock & Roll Racing has too few road hazards while this one has too many. Too bad they couldn't compromise. 3 / 5 Level Design Well designed tracks with lots of hazards, collectables, and features like boost pads and weapons. I only wish there were modes other than the one-and-only career mode. Again, this is a fun game t...

Super Off Road for SNES

Image
Review #580 Super Off Road The first game I bought for my SNES SNES 1992 Tradewest Racing Racing › Isometric C 81 / 100 Very Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Controls could not be better. Use combination of L/R along with the d-pad to make right turns. The physics are crazy but so forgiving. Tons of fun to pick up and play for 15-30 min at a time. I love that it doesn't overstay it's welcome. Racing games are best in short spurts and this has that down. Super fun as a multiplayer game too. To bad it isn't 4 player and online. Collect money quickly to power up your ride. Only negative is a lack of passwords but again the entire game takes 20 min so it's not really necessary. 4 / 5 Level Design So much varie...

RPM Radical Psycho Machine Racing for SNES

Image
Review #476 RPM Radical Psycho Machine Racing R.C. Pro-Am. When your car's battery is almost dead SNES 1992 Interplay Racing Racing › Isometric X 8 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay The absolute worst racing gameplay ever. Slooooow movement The track is too narrow for two vehicles so you can't pass. So frustrating. So slow that if you don't have momentum you won't make it up tall hills. So stupid 1 / 5 Level Design Ok fine the tracks have some decent design, but no features. They're devoid of anything remotely interesting. Booooring 1 / 5 Theme The extreme 90s motif begins and ends at the title screen. The game is unbelievably boring and bland...

Rock 'n Roll Racing for SNES

Review #468 Rock 'n Roll Racing R.C. Pro-Am. With rock & roll SNES 1993 Interplay Racing Racing › Isometric F 55 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. Biker Mice From Mars for SNES

Image
Review #61 Biker Mice From Mars R.C. Pro-Am. With mice SNES 1994 Konami Racing Racing › Isometric E 65 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay Simple but effective. I got mixed up a few times due to the isometric view but it was manageable. Controls allow you to turn in 8 directions so you can easily snap to going straight. Also you can use R or L to shift laterally instead of doing a serpentine move which is lovely. Excellent controls for this sort of game. 2 / 5 Level Design Unfortunately, the tracks are incredibly boring. Nearly all are just a simple square. They have a variety of cosmetic differences but they're otherwise devoid of character. Very disappointing. Plays exactly like R.C. Pro-am ...
