Rock 'n Roll Racing

R.C. Pro-Am. With rock & roll

Genre: racing - isometric

Publisher: Interplay

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

RPM Racing at double speed and with classic rock songs playing. Still the same ho hum gameplay, just a faster speed. Controls well enough although the core gameplay is a bit boring. Takes forever to make enough money to buy stuff to upgrade your car.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Fairly boring track designs. This time they're littered with armor and money ala Super Sprint but there are no features or obstacles in the mostly square tracks. Beyond being a series of right angles the tracks all look about the same. Some variety would've been nice. Only one mode - career mode.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Feels again like an "extreme 90s" motif which has not aged well. The setting and character designs seem to almost be aping F-Zero but in a very unattractive way. Not cute. The classic rock is the main feature of the presentation although it doesn't have any logical reason for being here. Whatever

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

A few details were added in the background but the track and car models are virtually unchanged from RPM. In other words, they're bland. The animation is well done and moves beautifully but the artwork is just not great.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

I'm not a classic rock fan but I have to admit that the tunes in this game are the highlight. Besides the music this game has bad sounds. An enthusiastic announcer talks constantly and there's no car noise. But the music makes up for it

Overall Score: 55
