Motteke Tamago for PCE CD

Image
Review #11073 Motteke Tamago Cock fight PCE CD 1997 Naxat Soft Arcade Arcade › N/a G 47 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Terrible Bomberman clone. Movement feels fine, but everything else about the gameplay sucks. The objective is convoluted - collect eggs, wait for them to hatch and hope that the hatched chicks return to your base. Side objectives are to pick up powerups and to knock out opponents to separate them from chicks and their own power ups. However, the frequency of these pickups causes the game to quickly devolve into chaos as one of two opponents gather more and more strength until they are barreling around the screen, keeping you perpetually stun locked. If you somehow keep your head above water you survive it even win a round but doing so is hi...

FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 for MD PAL

Image
Review #6814 FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 The real last one MD PAL 1997 Electronic Arts Sports Sports › Soccer G 48 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Plays just like 97. Once again, I can't complete a pass or shoot. Ultimately I just feel like I'm running around without any chance of scoring. But that's soccer for you, eh? Passes and shots feel so weak. 3 / 5 Level Design All the modes. 1 / 5 Theme I hate soccer. Takes million button presses to enter a game. 3 / 5 Art Style Looks good again. Sprites are still small but they animate incredibly well. 3 / 5 Audio The menu and title tracks are much much better...

Lucky Luke for SNES PAL

Image
Review #3917 Lucky Luke Cowboys in Aliens 3 SNES PAL 1997 Infogrames Adventure Adventure › Platform E 61 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Slow default movement and a too short jump. Hold Y to run and double jump height. This should've been standard. You don't even need to get a running start. Limited ammo and dynamite. Use guns to eliminate the rare enemy and the dynamite and collectible items to solve simple fetch quest items. The "puzzles" involve nothing more than collecting an item (usually one that doesn't look important) and then walk over the spot where it's automatically used. Kinda dumb. You can also jump to certain ledges, although this isn't explained and I had to watch a longplay to even know ...

Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun for SNES PAL

Image
Review #3901 Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun Two-lane Frogger SNES PAL 1997 Infogrames Adventure Adventure › Platform H 39 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay Mostly the same gameplay as the first game, but slightly less laggy. You still only have a run and jump button, a huge hitbox, low health which doesn't refill between stages, few health pickups, nothing to collect or items to use, and an oppressive time limit that gives you barely enough time to finish each stage. 1 / 5 Level Design Again, nearly identical to the prior game. Short stages that require experimentation and memorization. Most have two planes that allow you to go back or forward to avoid enemies. It feelsa bit like Frogger, if there was on...

Pro Yakyuu Star for SFC

Image
Review #2282 Pro Yakyuu Star Precious Moments baseball SFC 1997 Culture Brain Sports Sports › Baseball F 56 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Not bad, not great. Hitting is fine, but pitching is not good. A, B, and X each throw a different speed of pitch. Holding up or down controls the height of the pitch and left and right obviously control movement. Controlling height is a novel idea but in practice doesn't work. You can't effectively do both the height and the movement. Nice idea but prolly executed. My main complain is the dumb AI which throws to the wrong base, moves all players at once, and takes terrible paths to the ball. The result is far too many triples. But again, not a bad experience. Just a bit strange. ...

Pro Yakyuu Nettou: Puzzle Stadium for SFC

Image
Review #2281 Pro Yakyuu Nettou: Puzzle Stadium Baseball Puyo SFC 1997 Coconuts Japan Puzzle Puzzle › Blocks F 55 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay Match 4 in classic Puyo style, but with some weird added baseball mechanic whereby combos earn you hits and runs scored. One combo nets a single, two a double, etc. At least I think that's what's going on. It's hard to tell. Aside from that it's your standard puyo game. 3 / 5 Level Design Honestly, I'm not sure there were a bunch of modes. At least I think so. But I think that it's core. This is a competitive game. There were so many menus that looked reminiscent of baseball game where you're picking your lineup and whatever else. ...

Pikiinya! for SFC

Image
Review #2271 Pikiinya! Pink penguin porn puzzler SFC 1997 ASCII Puzzle Puzzle › Blocks F 59 / 100 Not Bad, but Flawed Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay It looks and plays a lot like Mahou Poi Poi Poitto with large 2x2 blocks that can be rotated. Your goal is to assemble rows of 6 solid blocks of ice or 6 contiguous sets of penguins to eliminated those blocks. This is easier said than done due to the massive blocks. One small mistake spells certain doom for your game. Even in the easiest setting I can't last more than 8 minutes in a match. While it's fun for a little while it quickly becomes a drag. Were it the only block game I'd have ever played I'd say this is a good game, but against its competitors it's only average. 3 / 5 ...

Nintama Rantarou 3 for SFC

Image
Review #2252 Nintama Rantarou 3 Still looks like Goemon, plays like Home Alone 3 would've played SFC 1997 Culture Brain Action Action › Hack n Slash H 28 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay Actually playable this time around, although just barely. Still stupid laggy. 1 / 5 Level Design Stage select allows you to choose from a set of 2-3 screen platforming levels. Terrible, but much improved from the first two games. 3 / 5 Theme 3 / 5 Art Style Even better graphics. Again, looks good in screenshots but in motion it's awful. 2 / 5 Audio More SFC reviews Browse all reviews

Ganpuru - Gunman's Proof for SFC

Image
Review #2127 Ganpuru - Gunman's Proof Zelda meets Smash TV SFC 1997 ASCII Adventure Adventure › Overhead C 80 / 100 Very Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 4 / 5 Gameplay It's funny, I've tried this game several times before but couldn't get into it. This time however, I found myself really enjoying it. It's a mix between Zelda (obviously) and a twin stick shooter like Smash TV. The key is to always hold down on R or L which allows you to strafe. Most enemies shoot at you, but they can only shoot in four directions so it's best to angle yourself in one of the combination directions so you can hit them but they can't hit you. Movement is fast, maybe a little faster than Zelda 3, and it's fun to traverse the world. However, strafing does get a...

Dark Law: Meaning of Death for SFC

Image
Review #2064 Dark Law: Meaning of Death A tale of two games being mashed together SFC 1997 ASCII RPG RPG › Japanese H 25 / 100 Horrible Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 1 / 5 Gameplay What a weird mix of gameplay. Movement feels good. It's fast and feels almost like an action RPG. Terranigma comes to mind. However, the way you interact with the environment is awkward, as you can press A, X, or Y to interact and doing so with almost anything displays some text. Most of this is useless, but certain events are only triggered by interacting with certain items so you have to walk around clicking on everything. Weird. Then there's the town. This looks and feels like a completely different game. You leave the overhead Zelda-esque view and navigate via a first-person view that is ...

Bushi Seiryuuden: Futari no Yuusha for SFC

Image
Review #2042 Bushi Seiryuuden: Futari no Yuusha Turn-based Zelda 2 with Wind Waker's plot SFC 1997 T&E Soft Adventure Adventure › Overhead D 70 / 100 Good Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay There are two modes of gameplay: an overhead view, and a side-scrolling view where combat takes place. Enemies are visible on the overhead view and attacking them or being attacked by them initiates the side-scrolling combat. Combat is turn-based and so is movement on the overhead view. The top-down view reminds me a bit of Crypt of the Necromancer. Enemies move when you move so you have to time your attacks and movement so that you have an advantage on each turn. It's more interesting than it sounds. However, the movement is so stilted, especially on the overhead view th...

Bakukyuu Renpatsu!! Super B-Daman for SFC

Image
Review #2016 Bakukyuu Renpatsu!! Super B-Daman Read the review for Bomberman B-Daman SFC 1997 Hudson Soft Puzzle Puzzle › Overhead E 69 / 100 Your mileage may vary Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 3 / 5 Gameplay 4 / 5 Level Design 3 / 5 Theme The only difference between this and its prequel, Bomberman B-Daman, is that you get generic anime characters instead of Bomberman. Actually, there are a couple of times when Bomberman appears but for the most part it's a bunch of nobodies. So, one dock for that. 4 / 5 Art Style 4 / 5 Audio More SFC reviews Browse all reviews

Virtua Fighter 2 for Genesis

Image
Review #4650 Virtua Fighter 2 Turn off damage. It's more fun that way Genesis 1997 Sega Fighting Fighting › 1v1 G 45 / 100 Bad Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 2 / 5 Gameplay This is a bit of an oddity. I was expecting some sort of pseudo 3D effect but there's nothing. Nothing. It's just a straight up 2D fighting game. You can win by either hitting an enemy until their life bar is gone or pushing them out of the ring. Controls are incredibly simple. There's only three buttons. A punch, a kick and a guard. There's little nuance to the controls otherwise. So you basically just have to mash on one or both of the attack buttons and guard when an enemy's trying to attack you. I played the arcade game many many years ago and I don't remember it much, but ...

Nightmare Circus for Genesis

Image
Review #4401 Nightmare Circus Uhh, this is a demo, right? Genesis 1997 Sega Action Action › Punch n Kick X 8 / 100 You've been warned Screenshot used for review/reference purposes. 0 / 5 Gameplay Feels like the marriage of Mortal Kombat with Majyuuou "The King of Demons" for the Super Famicom. I can see why this didn't get a physical release in the United States. This game sucks so bad. You've got Mortal Kombat style moves. So a punch and a kick and you can duck or block. Enemies bounce around way faster than you can move. So good luck catching them and hitting them. I have no idea what the objective of the game is. Some of the most laggy long animation moves you'll see in a 16-bit game. Oh and you can jump by pushing up. Sega Channel exclusive ...
