Pro Yakyuu Nettou: Puzzle Stadium

Baseball Puyo

Genre: puzzle - blocks

Publisher: Coconuts Japan

Year: 1997

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Match 4 in classic Puyo style, but with some weird added baseball mechanic whereby combos earn you hits and runs scored. One combo nets a single, two a double, etc. At least I think that's what's going on. It's hard to tell. Aside from that it's your standard puyo game.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Honestly, I'm not sure there were a bunch of modes. At least I think so. But I think that it's core. This is a competitive game. There were so many menus that looked reminiscent of baseball game where you're picking your lineup and whatever else. It felt like way more options than was needed for such a simple puzzle game

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

A tiny bit of novelty being a puzzle game centered around a baseball theme but the baseball theme itself is barely present. The only real effect it has is a baseball diamond shown in between the two competitors, stacks of blocks. And all of those aforementioned menus. Oh, and the blocks are shaped like baseballs, the garbage ones anyway.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

I don't know. The graphics themselves are fine. Just not very interesting. I don't know how to express it. Really. Everything just looks bland.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The only one track and it's not very interesting. It's just perpetually repeats a horn tooting doo-doo-doo do, do, do, doo-doo-doo do, do, do, and do on.

Overall Score: 55
