Nightmare Circus
Uhh, this is a demo, right?Genre: action - punch n kick
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1997
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 0
Gameplay Notes:
Feels like the marriage of Mortal Kombat with Majyuuou "The King of Demons" for the Super Famicom. I can see why this didn't get a physical release in the United States. This game sucks so bad. You've got Mortal Kombat style moves. So a punch and a kick and you can duck or block. Enemies bounce around way faster than you can move. So good luck catching them and hitting them. I have no idea what the objective of the game is. Some of the most laggy long animation moves you'll see in a 16-bit game. Oh and you can jump by pushing up.
Level Design Score: 0
Level Design Notes:
As you begin the game, there are four rooms available to choose from. The first room has two little guys too short to hit with a normal punch or kick (think the Flea Men from Castlevania). I hit them each 30 or 40 times and they just kept getting up so I have no idea what I was supposed to do there. The second room drops you onto an elevator that descends down into a fire where you promptly get burned and die. Lovely! The third room has a few different screens that you can walk to the right or left to get to and doors that don't open and is otherwise empty. Again, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do here. Scheme feels like a demo or an alpha version that was never completed.
Theme Score: 0
Theme Notes:
The theme feels like a KISS concert or something.
Art Style Score: 1
Art Style Notes:
It's a whole lot of black, red and yellow. The sprites themselves look amateurish and the backgrounds are mostly static. Looks like a 1990 game and not a late gen 16-bit title.
Audio Score: 3
Audio Notes:
The music is easily the best part of this game. It's not really my style. It's going for a Halloween theme but has some nice air guitar rock sound to it. The sound effects and voice samples are good quality but again not attractive.
