Gameplay

Slow default movement and a too short jump.
Hold Y to run and double jump height. This should've been standard. You don't even need to get a running start.
Limited ammo and dynamite. Use guns to eliminate the rare enemy and the dynamite and collectible items to solve simple fetch quest items. The "puzzles" involve nothing more than collecting an item (usually one that doesn't look important) and then walk over the spot where it's automatically used. Kinda dumb.
You can also jump to certain ledges, although this isn't explained and I had to watch a longplay to even know it was possible. In fact many mechanics and objectives in this game are unexplained.
Difficult platforming and an overall slow pace of play

Level Design

Short but memorable mini games between stages, including an arm wrestling match with a horse and a ride through a canyon while shooting at rocks and dynamite. While interesting diversions, these games are either baffling (when arm wrestling, alternate A and B to build strength and Y to use it) or dead simple (you auto target in the canyon chase).
Your given no clue what to do (visual, textual, or otherwise) which causes way to many "what the heck am I supposed to do" moments.
It was worth a playthrough, but I'll never revisit it.

Theme

You're Woody from Toy Story and the townsfolk from Yuma need you to solve a variety problems caused by the local ruffians. It's cute.

Art Style

Some of the finest pixel art and animation of this generation. Nice parallax and character designs as well. Unfortunately there's no much going on. I don't recall ever seeing more than one enemy at a time and even though the backgrounds look fantastic, they don't do anything. They're just...there. pretty to look at, but boring to watch.

Audio

Oh boy the music drove me batty. It fits the setting to a T, but there's only so much banjo I can tolerate in a day. Ick
