Super Off Road for Genesis
Review #4568
Super Off Road
Play the SNES instead
Gameplay
What a difference a controller makes. Whereas the controls on the SNES version were incredibly tight, here they're slow and unforgiving. Not having the L/R buttons completely nerfs the controls.
For some reason this game plays about 3/4 speed compared to the SNES or arcade.
Level Design
So much variety in the tracks. They each fit in one screen but there are so many creative choices, like without walls, with pillars, a huge sandy hill to drive along. Every track feels unique and even has a name. After you've seen them all you then go backwards on each. Very cool.
Theme
Presentation is great and nothing gets in your way. Jumping into the game is quick and easy. No censorship of the ladies in this version.
I didn't think I would but I miss having a rival. In the SNES version Ivan Steward is that annoying guy who is powered up at the beginning but eventually you can overtake him and leave him in the dust. This was such a great feeling but it's absent in this version. It just doesn't feel as satisfying.
Art Style
The tiny sprites animate well and move at a high framerate but the colors are all wrong. Everything has a bland yellow tint instead of the rich orange from the SNES version.
Audio
Oh my. The awesome soundtrack from the arcade and SNES versions is replaced by a horrnedous assault on the ears. Sounds are almost completely absent and there's no fanfare at the start or end of each race. Horrible, horrible sound across the board.
