Dr. Mario for SFC

Dr. Mario

Pop those pills

Genre: puzzle - blocks

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1998

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Ah Dr. Mario, you're so awesome. So approachable, so customizable, so flexible. All falling blocks games should allow you to turn pieces horizontally, in my opinion, because it allows for so much flexibility in how you play! You can play it how you want and a single misstep doesn't ruin your whole session. Controls are necessarily responsive. If something goes wrong it's entirely your fault. It's so satisfying to set up a bunch of 3-way sets only to drop a whole bunch of pieces in a chain reaction.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Pick between one-player, two-player, and VS mode. Two very important customization options, in the Virus Level and Speed to effectively give you a level select and difficulty settings. I wish there was a puzzle mode like the one in Tetris Attack, but that's a minor gripe and doesn't take away from what's here.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Classic. You're Mario (the Dr. version) and you're killing off viruses. Seeing them fall down after killing one is so fun. Tons of personality here.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

The graphics are lightly enhanced from the NES game, but they're as clean as ever. The colorful backgorunds are fun and the minimal animations of Mario throwing pills and the viruses dancing are lovely.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

This should probably be a 4, but I have to dock it points for butchering the classic tunes from the NES original. It's still good, but should be better.
