Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension

I'm just Saiyan

Genre: fighting - 1v1

Publisher: Bandai

Year: 1996

System: SFC

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Laggy, imprecise controls. Most attacks have a very short range which makes the hit detection feel awful. Movement with most characters is slow. Has the strangest health meter I've ever seen in a fighting game - You've got a ki value in addition to the actual health bar. Once your ki is exhausted. Your health will be drawn when you take damage. The ki drains very slowly but health drops precipitously. You can recharge your ki with a taunt move. One interesting move allows you to jump into the background and then forward to make an attack. It looks cool and is almost like a warp. Unfortunately, the fighting experience feels empty. As near as I can tell, everyone has the same special moves which are hard to pull off and don't do a whole lot. I don't like fighting games to begin with but this one didn't capture my attention.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Includes all the usual modes including story, tournaments, and versus, plus a practice mode which unfortunately doesn't explain how to do any of the special moves. The story mode is really strange. I'm pretty sure you're supposed to lose certain matches, but whether you win them or not, it proceeds to the next story beat. So win or lose, you're going to be told the entire story. And of course the story is told through dialogue alone. So it's not even interesting, it doesn't show anything.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

The presentation is excellent and the artwork and everything about Dragon Ball is cool.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Excellent artwork and animation. The sprites are smaller than I would hope but they look nice. Overall I think the graphics are the highlight of this game.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Pretty boring music I must say. I was hoping for a lot more. Everything just feels muted. The sound effects are good with a fair amount of voice samples.

Overall Score: 49
