Secret of Evermore

Secret of Mana 2 this ain't

Genre: adventure - overhead

Publisher: Squaresoft

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

All of Secret of Mana's warts: - 20% draw distance - Pseudo turn based combat - Attacks that register as a miss way too often - Wildly random damage Switch between you and your dog via Select button, but why would you ever switch to the dog?? I've earned some magic (alchemy) and got an item that lets me run fast but for the life of me I can't figure out how to use either ability. The control menu is no help. Wth Constant resource gathering gets old real fast. The dog sniffs incessantly and finds a spot and then you have to click B about 15 times around that spot before you find the exact pixel to stand on. Infuriating Combat is tough since your weapon has short reach and enemy hit boxes are hard to gauge given the perspective.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

What I wouldn't give for a map. Still, the areas are most linear and easy to follow. Interesting details make them seem alive. Infinitely spawning enemies don't help tho.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Nice cinematic opening. Back to the future vibe. Almost an Earthbound feel as well given the modern setting. The first area even has Chrono Trigger 65,000,000BC vibe. Pretty cool.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Impressive graphics. A lot to like here. Unfortunately the color palette is drab and areas recycle assets so often that everything runs together.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

Mixed bag. The music is nice in spots, with some serious bass, but overall the "music" is mostly just atmospheric background noise. I played for 2 hours and can't remember anything resembling a melody.

Overall Score: 53
