M-1 Abrams Battle Tank for Genesis
Review #4322
M-1 Abrams Battle Tank
MS DOS called. It wants its tank back
Gameplay
True simulation. You can change the view between commander, gunner, driver, and cupola. You can also control the turret separate from the rest of the tank. Lots of things you can do, but ultimately it's like all of these games right back to Battlezone - aim and shoot until you're inevitably shot yourself.
The key problem with this game is that movement is so incredibly awkward. Driving is an exercise in patience. Steering feels like you're skating on ice. Every steer is an oversteer making it impossible to drive in a straight line. Lining up a shot is therefore impossible so the only way to succeed is to steer far to one side, begin a turn toward the target, and fire when the target meets the reticle. It's insane.
The other problem is the horrible framerate, which is to be expected but still is no fun.
Level Design
Huge open area with zero help finding targets. And very few targets.
No idea how to play this properly.
I drove around until I ran out of gas which only takes about 5 minutes.
Theme
The mission briefing got me hyped before dropping me into a boring simulation.
Art Style
I really enjoyed the various views, even though the artwork was clearly made in MS Paint and the world has fewer polygons than Hard Drivin'. Still, it has its charms.
Audio
MS DOS sounds. Brings me back to those days in the computer lab in elementary school.
