MechWarrior
Faceball 2000 with mechsGenre: simulation - tank/mech
Publisher: Activision
Year: 1993
System: SNES
Gameplay Score: 1
Gameplay Notes:
FPS with limited ammo and no ability to strafe. So, not good. Controls are extremely simple - walk/lumber around with d-pad and shoot with B. A turns on jets so you can awkwardly fly but this make you bounce around uncontrollably.
Level Design Score: 1
Level Design Notes:
All levels play out the same. Rotate until you see a bad guy, mash until he's dead, rotate to find the next one, and so on until they're all dead or you are. Most stages are over in about 5-15 seconds.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
Post apocalyptic future with mechs duking it out. You're some sort of anti-hero whose family was killed and you're out for revenge. I guess. Beats me. Didn't catch my interest.
Art Style Score: 2
Art Style Notes:
Butt ugly for the most part. The background art of the between-level area isn't bad. It's a hangar where you fix up your mech and looks kinda cool. The actual playing field is a pixelated mess. The enemies don't scale well and animate poorly. Even for 1993 this looks pretty bad.
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
Eh, it's only ok. The music is mostly just a series of long notes with brass instruments. Not fun to listen to but there is some variety. The sounds aren't bad, with explosions and missiles being fired.
