Bullfight Ring no Hasha for PCE
Review #8015
Bullfight Ring no Hasha
Kung Fu on the street, Boxing in the ring
Gameplay
It's got two distinct modes - a beat 'em up section like Kung-Fu Master, followed by a boxing match. Both are sidescrollers, and can be easily cheesed. In the beat 'em up sections you can crouch to deliver low kicks, just like in Kung-Fu Master (Kung Fu on the NES), and in the ring you can simply mash II to deliver a rapid series of long jabs. In both cases your opponents can't reach you so you'll easily defeat all comers.
Outside of the ring you can punch, kick, and jump, but you can't jump and attack, so it's only good for avoiding projectiles. The controls are horribly laggy and stiff. It feels like an early 80's arcade game.
Inside the ring is a little better, with three kinds of punches, although only one is worth using. You have almost no lateral movement, so there's no point in trying to walk.
Level Design
The only challenge in this game is a fast-moving projectile which comes from behind while you're on the streets. This comes on a predictable cycle, so the safest way to progress is to wait for that barrage, dodge it with a jump, and then scroll forward to fight an enemy. Then wait for the next barrage, and repeat.
Otherwise, the levels are all the same. Walk to the right, jumpt to collect a couple of floating money bags, buy a license at the shop, and then get to the end of the level to begin the next bout. And the bouts are all the same too. Pretty uninspiring.
Theme
I love the idea of being this street tough brawler who has to fight his way between each bout.
Art Style
Early 8-era stuff. Not impressive by any measure, although the sprites are attractive, if barely animated. The artwork in the ring is far better than on the street.
Audio
Some nice tunes. It has an NES vibe to it, for sure.
