Gameplay

Mash A.

The objective is to score a TKO by reducing your opponent's health bar three times. You've got a few punches but all are executed with the A button. Pressing A with a direction on the d-pad unleashes an upppercut or hook but the range on these attacks is so short that they're nearly impossible to land. Besides, there's no stamina to worry about so you can just keep mashing away on A to throw your long-reaching jab. This doesn't guarantee success since the hit detection is so awful. Your opponent can often just walk right through your jabs and get close enough to throw a more powerful hook. So it feels more about luck than skill. It's entertaining, but as with most boxing titles it's extremely shallow from a gameplay perspective.

Level Design

Has only one mode - 1P story mode. There's no save and no password so you always start fresh every time.

3 / 5

Theme

Based on a manga, so there's a cutscene between bouts.

Art Style

Huge, well-animated sprites. The ring has a nifty pseudo-3D effect that plays as you move between the left, middle, and right sides. The crowd rotates independently from the ring, giving a sense of depth. Love it.

Audio

Some nice music that feels lifted from an early NeoGeo or Capcom arcade title. The crowd noise and sound effects are also good.
