Mario Lemieux Hockey for Genesis

Image: MobyGames

Mario Lemieux Hockey

Ice Hockey, minus the NES Max controller

Genre: sports - hockey

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Plays a lot like Ice Hockey for the NES. Squat little hockey players race around the ice quickly. Although your movement feels fairly slow. Passing is easy although opponents intercept passes frequently. Shooting takes too long. The AI is weird. Players pick a spot and then circle around until something changes. It looks really weird and is a bit distracting. It makes it hard to pass or set up plays cuz everyone is always moving. Overall, it's a fun little game.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

There's a fair amount of settings you can change like turning on or off fighting rules and the referee. There's also a difficulty level. Exhibition and tournament modes.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Typical player endorsed game. No NHL or NHLPA licenses. Feels like all those other early Genesis sports games.

Art Style Score: 1

8-bit quality graphics through and through.
