Fatal Rewind

Gatekeeping

Genre: action - gun

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Tiny character with an extremely short jump. Platforming is a constant headache. Can't make midair adjustments. Lots of weapons to acquire from descructible boxes. Most have a short range. Weird button combo to use secondary items (down + B). You can walk along platforms and climb vertical platforms.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Levels are vertical and doubleback on themselves when you scroll horizontally. This feels very strange as it's hard to know if you're seeing something new or if things are repeating. Your objective is to get to the top of each screen before lava comes up from the bottom of the screen. The primary mechanic are gates which must be unlocked by collectable geometric keys. By and large you progress by climbing up one platform, find a key, use the key on the gate, and move to the next vertical platform. The only variety is in whether you go to the right or the left to find that key. There are no bosses.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Generic sci-fi setting. I'm not sure what is going on or if there even is a story.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Has that patented Amiga look. The Brits sure loved a candy cane pattern, didn't they? Sprites are so tiny that it's hard to tell what they are. I can't even figure out what my character is supposed to be. It's some sort of mech, but is there a human driver in it? Is it just a robot? Is it techno-organic in some way? In any case, it looks a bit like the mouser enemies from TMNT. Huge HUD which covers the bottom 1/3rd of the screen. Drab colors. Good animation

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Very garbled sounds. The music is poorly composed but the sound quality is so bad that I muted it. Sounds aren't much better either.

Overall Score: 55

Review ID: 915
