Fatal Labyrinth
The simplest overhead dungeon crawler everGenre: rpg - dungeon
Publisher: Sega
Year: 1991
System: Genesis
Gameplay Score: 2
Gameplay Notes:
It's a very simple single party member dungeon crawler. Basically a roguelike. Zero skill required. Success is determined by luck. Oddly reminds me of Crypt of the NecroDancer since the view is overhead but enemies only move when you do. You have to stand next to them to attack by pressing toward them. Your hit rate is something like 20% so encounters take a while. Best to attack from a doorway so you can't be surrounded. Slow movement. Lots of menuing and inventory management to throw away all the redundant weapons and armor loot you pick up. Level up by defeating enemies.
Level Design Score: 2
Level Design Notes:
Procedurally generated dungeon. Similar game design as Brandish for SNES Each room has hallways which are hidden until you visit them. Some rooms are empty while others have loot. You're objective is to find the stairs to the next floor. Reminds me of Enter the Gungeon.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
A dragon has taken a goblet which gives light to the world. Whatever. At least it's something
Art Style Score: 1
Art Style Notes:
Very basic. Same times repeated over and over. No animation to speak of. Sprites are tiny and boring. Looks like an SMS title
Audio Score: 1
Audio Notes:
Short song is pleasant but plays constantly and repeats after about 10 seconds. It's also out of place. Sounds like a platformer rather than a dungeon crawler song. Mute Sounds are weird. The title screen behind with a horrible, loud scratching sound in the opening cinematic. First impressions are bad.
