Mutant League Hockey for Genesis

Image: MobyGames

Mutant League Hockey

The better of the two Mutant League games

Genre: sports - hockey

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Year: 1994

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Plays a bit slower than the NHL games, bit very similar to them. Opponents don't swarm to you. Thankfully. It's possible to pass the puck around and skate around. The gimmick is random environmental hazards that will kill you or your opponent. This puts you in a temporary power play. It's novel and a nice change of pace from the regular hockey games.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Exhibition and season modes. Settings dial up or down the environmental hazards.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

I'm not sure why there's monsters playing hockey, but here we are. Feels almost like if Monsters Inc. had sports teams, although these guys are a little more violent. The animations are fun and all the comments that refs and your coach makes between plays are also very funny.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Fun character designs. Also a strong visual language for which player you've selected and who has the puck. The graphics use a small pallet of colors and aren't very detailed, but they're fun. The performance of the graphics is much better here than in Mutant League Football.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Music and sound that fit the theme perfectly

Overall Score: 63
