Adventures of Batman & Robin for Genesis
Review #4004
Adventures of Batman & Robin
Shinobi meets Gunstar Heroes
Gameplay
Most of the levels are run n gun style with you throwing batarangs from a distance or a punch or kick when up close.
Enemies swarm to you and seemingly spawn infinitely so your best bet is to push to the right as often as possible.
There are two levels like a Shinobi game but I found it difficult to jump up to the second level so it's hard to kill enemies who are up there.
Enemies take multiple hits and the hit detection isn't perfect.
Overall it controls well but the enemies and design hamper the experience.
Level Design
Ok hear me out. The levels themselves vary greatly from one another but within each level you're doing the same thing over and over until the level mercifully ends. This is the weakest thing about the game. There are some genuinely interesting set pieces within each level, like a huge explosion, but fighting off hordes of enemies gets old pretty fast.
Theme
Batman! And, sigh, Robin.
The character models are loosely based on Batman the Animated Series but they look different enough that something feels a bit off.
Art Style
Some of the most impressive sprites and effects I've ever seen in a 16 bit title! The pseudo 3D effects throughout the game are a sight to behold.
Cut scenes and between level artwork is huge, bold and beautiful.
Audio
Holy crap what a thumping techno soundtrack! I was not expecting this from a Batman game. A few tracks are obnoxious but on the whole this is a great soundtrack. The sound quality is rather poor but the compositions are great examples of EDM
