Batman Returns

Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded.

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Konami

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Wow it plays so fast! Mashing lets you punch so quickly. Extremely satisfying movement and attacks. Excellent hit detection with no cheap hits. The grabs, throws, and projectile attacks make you feel powerful. Love how visceral the action is. Not just a typical brawler either. 2D platforming stages and racing levels are interspersed but retain familiar controls and attacks.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

The variety of levels shifts between standard brawler levels, 2D platforming, and racing levels. Feels almost like Legend of the Mystical Ninja. Unfortunately the game is very short.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Not a fan of the movie but I'm impressed by how closely the game follows the plot. End level storyboards update you on the story.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Huge sprites. Very well drawn and animated. Gotham is dark but it matches the source material to a T.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Excellent music but the star here is the amazing sound design. The visceral sounds of crunching bones and smashing stone drawer you in like nothing else. You feel like The Batman
