Battletoads

Wait, this came out on the Genesis?

Gameplay

Suffers the same fate as Ninja Gaiden Trilogy for the SNES. It's a good game. Just not what you remember it being. This makes it easier to see its flaws. Nostalgia really is a powerful agent.
The controls are very floaty, just like the NES game, but I feel like I'm noticing them more here.
Pretty bad detection. If you get out ahead of an enemy's attack, you can pummel them so long as you don't get surrounded. And that way it works well and favors memorization. It's definitely a game you have to get good at before you can succeed at all.

Level Design

Classic game design. Each level is basically different game. In many of the levels there's a section that plays like a standard best em up but each level has a segment which plays unlike any other level in the game. Herein lies the game's challenge and its novelty which makes it incredibly memorable.

Theme

I'm a sucker for Battletoads. It's cheesy but a great TMNT clone.

Art Style

The graphics are a big upgrade over the NES version. At least the backgrounds are. The sprites have a little bit of shading but otherwise aren't much different than they looked on the NES.
A fair amount of parallax scrolling was added to the backgrounds and lots of detail on each level.
The color is amped up as far as it'll go on a Sega Genesis.

Audio

Okay, this is where I'm going to take issue. The classic songs from the original don't sound good here. Just like with Ninja Gaiden something didn't translate well.
The sound effects also aren't what I remember.
