Bebe's Kids

A Series of Unfortunate Events in Da Hood

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Mandingo

Year: 1993

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

The game runs at about half speed. Massive lag between pressing a button and something happening onscreen. Buttons for punch and kick but these attacks are pointless as it takes about 30-40 hits to take down any enemy. Instead you have to perform an uppercut by holding L and R and press Y button. This kills enemies in 2-3 hits but is not intuitive and is even slower to execute than the one-button attacks. There are only three enemies - Bill Clinton, a man in a mouse suit, and a black panther. Hit detection is atrocious. You can hit an enemy when you're well behind an enemy kind of like Legend of the Mystical Ninja. If doesn't work the other way around so you have to stay above enemies.

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

Confusing, stupid, frustrating level design. The first level is a standard corridor which only ends when you walk through the door at the end. Enemies will spawn endlessly until you go through the door. This is unlike any brawler I've ever played and isn't explained by the game. The second screen has a baby knocking glass items off shelves and you have to break them before they hit the ground. But again, this isn't explained so it's confusing what you're supposed to do. Level 2 is the worst maze I've ever experienced in a video game with a very short timer and zero hints. Who designed this mess?! It's all about the same. Just weird, terrible design throughout.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

I guess it's based on a movie or TV show? No idea. The theme is a boy and girl with a baby are visiting an amusement park where authoritarian guys in suit insist that they don't have fun. Or something. I'm guessing that the characters are supposed to be inner city kids who are street smart and live a tough life. Again, I don't know. It's reminds me of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Ugly sprites. Flat, boring, two-dimensional background artwork. NES+ graphics. Reminds me of THQ stuff like Home Alone or Wayne's World. Virtually no animation.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

There's no music, just a beat. Here's the extent of the beat that plays: "Dum dum. Dum dee dum dum." Repeat.

Overall Score: 5
