Beyond Oasis for Genesis
Review #4063
Beyond Oasis
Sega's answer to Illusion of Gaia
Gameplay
Beat em up combat. Special moves are hard to perform.
Poor hit detection
25% draw distance while walking and 10% when running. Uggh. Why was that still a thing in 1995?
Enemies follow random, dumb movement patterns.
You get a familiar who performs magic attacks. They're slow and deliberate, just like all other movement in the game.
I want to like this game but something about it feels off
Despite all that, the game is actually playable. I could even see playing it to completion. The draw distance means you gotta move carefully but it's possible and the combat is slow but rewarding. Let's called it a mixed bag.
Level Design
Typical do this next design. Not bad but also not terribly engaging.
There's a map which shows where to go next. If it's accurate then the world is quite small.
Theme
The world is bold and beautiful and the anime cutscene at the start is a great intro.
However I can't help but chuckle everytime they call me Prince Ali. You're a white guy version of Aladdin and the fact that they even gave you the name is so on the nose that I wonder whether Disney sued Sega back in the day.
Art Style
Huge sprites. Too big in my opinion. The world feels small and cramped because so little of it is shown on screen.
Beautiful artwork with great animations and some nice effects.
Audio
Sound effects are awful. Typical late gen Genesis garbled sounds and voices.
The music is done by Yuzo Koshiro so I want to say it's stellar, but I don't like it at all. It sounds like he was trying to make a movie score but the grandiose movements just don't fit what's happening on screen. It doesn't fit and gets tiresome.
Horribly obnoxious chirping sounds when health or magic is low.
