Bimini Run for Genesis

Bimini Run

Cross Double Dragon, Miami Vice, and the Pilotwings helicopter levels

Genre: racing - vehicle combat

Publisher: Nuvision Entertainment

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Super floaty, imprecise controls. There's very little to do. You just explore a map, get to an island, shoot something on the island and then check your map to see where to go next. There are two kinds of enemies - low and high. Boats, sharks and sea creatures make up the low enemies and helicopters and flying sea creatures are the high. You have unlimited ammo so just hold down on high or low and serpentine to avoid being hit by projectiles. It's surprisingly fun but I wouldn't play this more than once.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

There are five or six levels that come in two different varieties. Either you're chasing another ship and just trying to stay close or you're moving from island to island destroying towers. Not much variety

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

You're a couple of brothers or law enforcement partners. I'm not sure. An evil genius straight out of a James Bond movie has kidnapped your sister and you chase him from level to level. Pretty silly stuff

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Poor artwork. The framerate is a couple of frames per second at best. Enemies don't scale well at all. It's almost so bad it's good because there's a certain joy in seeing just how awful it really is. There are only a handful of sprites that are repeated over and over again, so after a few seconds you've seen everything that the game has to offer.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

There's a single music track that plays more or less in the background. It's not bad but not great either and represents the only music in the game. The sound effects are straight out of an Atari 2600 title. Pretty bad for a 1991 game.
