Castlevania: Bloodlines for Genesis

Castlevania: Bloodlines

Castlevania refined

Genre: action - hack n slash

Publisher: Konami

Year: 1994

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Responsive controls. Much less stiff than most of the classic Castlevania games. Two playable characters - a whip or a spear. Can jump into or off of stairs. Yay! Lots of bosses to content with. Enemies with predictable patterns. I didn't realize how rare that quality is. Upgradable weapons. Difficult Tons of slowdown

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Long levels with 10 mini segments that act as spawn points. Tons of variety and memorable set pieces. No cheap enemies or impossible jumps. Some of the better levels in a Castlevania game but an equal number of dumb autoscroller levels that I could've lived without.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

It's Castlevania, but it's not. You get discount Belmont and a Poseidon wannabe. Even my wife and kids knew enough to ask, "why aren't you playing as Belmont or Alucard?"

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Really impressive effects, especially for a Genesis title. The reflection in Stage 2 and the swaying Tower of Pisa are highlights. Graphics are dark, but that's intentional. Lovely sprites and animation.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Amazing soundtrack. Rivals Castlevania IV in my book.

Overall Score: 84
