Castlevania: Bloodlines for Genesis
Review #4095
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Castlevania refined
Gameplay
Responsive controls. Much less stiff than most of the classic Castlevania games.
Two playable characters - a whip or a spear.
Can jump into or off of stairs. Yay!
Lots of bosses to content with.
Enemies with predictable patterns. I didn't realize how rare that quality is.
Upgradable weapons.
Difficult
Tons of slowdown
Level Design
Long levels with 10 mini segments that act as spawn points.
Tons of variety and memorable set pieces.
No cheap enemies or impossible jumps.
Some of the better levels in a Castlevania game but an equal number of dumb autoscroller levels that I could've lived without.
Theme
It's Castlevania, but it's not. You get discount Belmont and a Poseidon wannabe. Even my wife and kids knew enough to ask, "why aren't you playing as Belmont or Alucard?"
Art Style
Really impressive effects, especially for a Genesis title. The reflection in Stage 2 and the swaying Tower of Pisa are highlights.
Graphics are dark, but that's intentional.
Lovely sprites and animation.
Audio
Amazing soundtrack. Rivals Castlevania IV in my book.
