Champions World Class Soccer

The one with stiff controls

Genre: sports - soccer

Publisher: Flying Edge

Year: 1994

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Nigh unplayable. Controls are very stiff with directional movement and kicks happening after long, drawn out animations. Passing is basically impossible since your teammates never receive the ball and you can't aim it at them anyway. The kick hard button always sends the ball sailing too high to score. Like most soccer games, goals are rare.

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

It has two modes - tournament and exhibition. The field looks the same no matter what. The field is from the side and slightly tilted so you can see maybe 1/3 of the height of the field. A useful radar shows where other players are so you can attempt passes that I guarantee won't be received.

Theme Score: 1

Theme Notes:

I hate soccer. Presentation is minimal with a euro-looking newscaster introducing the match while shuffling some papers.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Looks alright without any slowdown or other hiccups. Smallish sprites don't have much detail and have minimal frames of animation.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

Crowd noise. Unobtrusive music during breaks.

Overall Score: 19

Review ID: 819
