Comix Zone for Genesis
Review #4122
Comix Zone
Unrealized potential
Gameplay
Way too difficult.
Enemies are damage sponges.
Health ticks off as you punch and kick enemies. Huh?
No health pickups.
Clever special weapon usage via the X, Y, Z buttons.
Combat is simple and obnoxious. Enemies often block in the middle of you hitting them with a flurry of punches. Long animation on attack means enemies can often surround and swarm you. You basically just mash on A. Pretty boring combat. No throws or any strategic movement or moves.
Minimal platforming.
Level Design
Branching paths. This sounds good but isn't because most paths take you to a dead end or a useless room. Mostly just a linear move from one small room to the next.
Hard to tell what is a platform.
Many panel transitions require you to move obstacles but this is extremely cumbersome.
The potential is here but the execution is wanting.
Theme
One point off for being cringey, but man what an awesome idea! Being "sucked into the computer" is a tired trope at this point, but being pulled into a comic book feels like a fresh idea (circa 1995). Jumping between panels feels great. I almost wish my radio buddy wasn't inside the comic book with me but was instead outside at the drawing board. That would introduce some cool triggered events.
Art Style
Incredible pixel artwork and animations. The comic book theme is fully realized.
Audio
Oy. Perfect example of crappy Sega Genesis sounds. Truly awful sounds are used in the music. What a shame.
