Doom for SNES

Doom

Impressive port. Hellish performance.

Genre: shooter - fps

Publisher: Williams

Year: 1995

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Doom is a game I've played several times but never gotten into. I've seen the intro level and then moved on. This was my first real experience with it on any platform. Controls are very slow but passable. Turning around takes a full 3 seconds so being surrounded is the worst thing possible. For this reason I generally walk tentatively into a room to catch the attention of baddies them retreat and lock them off as the come to investigate. Auto aim makes the game playable but also kinda boring. Only two guns after 4 levels... Are there more? I could see playing this to the end, if only to say I've done it.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Really nice levels. I never felt lost. Consistently gives you two paths to choose from so it's easy to backtrack and try option B after exploring option A. Good variety as well, with memorable landmarks to help you navigate.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Immersive gameplay. The FP perspective and fun in front are iconic and really effective at making you feel like a space marine.

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Ok impressive tech demo to be sure but wow is the resolution horrible. It's a pixelated mess. Also the game is insanely dark. There are times when the lights go out and the only way to navigate is too pause since it lightens the screen. Very strange.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Cool music with a unique track on every stage. Really enjoyed it although the sounds are minimal.

Overall Score: 56
