Elemental Master for Genesis

Elemental Master

The other Technosoft shooter

Genre: shooter - vertical

Publisher: Renovation Products

Year: 1993

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

Two buttons shoot forward or backward. No weapon power ups. Only a mirror image like Ninja Garden 2 or options like Gradius. Five weapon types - on earned after each level. Enemies go down quickly and seven health bars make for a very low difficulty. Excellent movement speed. My only gripe is that there no indicator when you take damage.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

Very short levels. The gimmick is physical barriers since you're grounded. This makes for some not obvious mechanics like taking damage from different colored ground.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Anime style cutscenes tell the story. Gives the game some personality. Reminds me of Ys. The man walking upward is unique amongst other vertical shooters. Reminds me of Kings Knight for Famicom.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

Lots of enemy types that vary between levels. Detailed tiles and sprites for an early Genesis game. Pleasing to took at.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Rocking music. Technosoft knew how to make good tunes for the Genesis.

Overall Score: 77

Review ID: 894
