F-Zero for SNES

F-Zero

Back to the future

Genre: racing - arcade

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 1992

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 4

Gameplay Notes:

I love how there's a huge field of competitors, but there's really just three other racers to give any thought about. It really narrows your focus to the track and those racers and everything else is just an environmental hazard. It reminds.me of Road Rash in that regard. Amazing sense of speed. Very responsive controls which admittedly take some getting used to with how floaty they are. The use of L and R buttons is amazing and I don't understand why more racing games on the SNES didn't make use of this. Seriously, the only other one I can think of is Super Off-Road.

Level Design Score: 5

Level Design Notes:

The tracks themselves are very well designed, with tight turns that can be navigated if you know what to do. The three difficulty levels are also nice. I also like how the game respects your time because a playthrough might only take 30-45 minutes. The name of the game isn't to play a huge, long, bloated career mode but rather to get achieve high scores.

Theme Score: 5

Theme Notes:

Racing games generally don't interest me. But racing hovercrafts in a far-flung future? That grabs my attention. Excellent presentation

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Some people complain about the pixelated mode 7 tracks and backgrounds but I love their charm. Everything moves buttery smooth without a hint of slowdown. Sprites are huge and well animated.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

In-game music. What a concept! Why don't other racing games have music? It also helps that this is one of the best 16-bit soundtracks ever, with long songs that perfectly compliment the tracks they play on. Sublime sound design all around

Overall Score: 90
