Faery Tale Adventure for Genesis

Faery Tale Adventure

Horribly horrible

Genre: adventure - overhead

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 0

Gameplay Notes:

Hoo boy. It's a good thing this released before Zelda 3. Although it released after Zelda 1, so there's no justification for its warts. First of it has a 10% draw distance. Yeah. Second your default weapon has a range of about 2 pixels so good look hitting anyone. Third, hit detection is non-existent so again, good luck. Virtually unplayable. Oh and you die in only a couple of hits. So the gameplay amounts to walking until bad guys pop out and kill you. Lovely. On screen menu ahs a bunch of non descript buttons but I never found any use for them.

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

No map. No landmark features. Just an endless expanse of green grass. No direction. No hints. Nothing. All you get is one screen of text telling you to find a mcguffin.

Theme Score: 0

Theme Notes:

Again you're given a screen of text. That's the extent of the narrative.

Art Style Score: 1

Art Style Notes:

Tiny, thin, Western style sprites that animate well, such as they are. The weekend feels empty with no NPCs and nothing to look at. Your attack animation is unintentionally hilarious. You wiggle it like you're having a sister that only affects one hand. Truly bizarre.

Audio Score: 1

Audio Notes:

Standard harpsichord. There are three songs - walking, a battle theme, and the death song. Maybe there are more but those are the only ones I heard.

Overall Score: 4

Review ID: 908
