Firepower 2000

Bring a friend

Genre: shooter - vertical

Publisher: Sunsoft

Year: 1992

System: SNES

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Insanely difficult and no difficulty levels to play with. Don't go in without save states. Weird mechanic where you can shoot in any direction by moving that way and holding the shot button. Changing direction requires letting go. It works but it's awkward. Not as bad as I remember it being but still a nuisance. Enemies are in two elevations - ground and sky. P1 is always on the ground and won't get hit directly by flying enemies. I wish I could play as the chopper as P1! The other problem is that the weapons are, in a word, lame. There's only one that offered any kind of screen coverage. The other three are a laser, a stream of missiles, and a flamethrower. These all shoot forward in a straight line. I really wish there were more weapons.

Level Design Score: 4

Level Design Notes:

Some really cool stages, but man the Stage 3 boss is ridiculous. The two elevations are very creative design.

Theme Score: 4

Theme Notes:

Interesting story is told through a great intro cutscene. An army of intelligent drones from underground have taken over our military tech and are attacking! I wish there was something between levels but whatever.

Art Style Score: 5

Art Style Notes:

Insanely good graphics. Effects like explosions are impressive. Great use of deep colors and shadows to mimic lighting effects. Everything has a chunky, solid look to it. Tons of enemy sprites including recognizable military weapons like helicopters, SR-71 planes, tanks and such.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

Taking and giving hits sounds substantial. Music is also very nice.

Overall Score: 74
