Growl for Genesis

Growl

Eco-Indiana Jones

Genre: action - beat em up

Publisher: Taito

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 3

Gameplay Notes:

Reminds me a lot of Adventures of Bayou Billy. Tons of enemies on screen at once. Like 8 of them. Thankfully the game has the opposite dynamic from Double Dragon. In that game enemies have insanely generous hit detection while most of your hits miss. Here it's the exact inverse. Males what could be an impossible task feel doable. Tons and tons of weapons to pick up. Swords, whips, sticks, dynamite, knives, you name it. Four playable characters. Long animations are the only real downer, and the mostly useless jump. Actually movement is fairly slow so I guess that's another wart.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

A few notable levels, like riding on the top of a train. The levels have some 3D features. Instead of just moving to the right. Sometimes it'll have you go up and right down right, or even back to the left. The only real problem is the monotony of facing wave after wave of the same enemies.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

Set in early 20th century. You're on a quest to stop evil poachers. Weird set of enemies. There's a white goon, a turban wearing middle eastern guy, and a blonde in heels and a business suit. She looks like she's straight out of the 80s. Uhh, this is that gang? I would give this a 4 but throwing around these ladies and keeping them to the face is off-putting. Definite Indiana Jones vibe.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

Very small sprites. Lovely background artwork. Most of it's dark but it's very well drawn. The side scrolling levels have some 3D design to them and the artwork makes it look convincing.

Audio Score: 3

Audio Notes:

I enjoyed the music although it was extremely repetitive. Sounds are also generic but fine. In fact it's really the same sound used for everything so I guess that's a weak spot in this game
