Junction for Genesis

Junction

The most difficult puzzle game I've ever played

Genre: puzzle - overhead

Publisher: Micronet

Year: 1991

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 1

Gameplay Notes:

A red ball travels along a path. You can increase its speed but can only show it briefly. You have to build a path for the ball to travel so it moves along some edge pieces once and only once. You do this by sliding one block at a time using an open space. It's like those frustrating sliding puzzles called "Klotski" (yes I looked that up). After one relatively easy level you're thrown into an insanely difficult series of puzzles. Good luck. Nice concept but the learning curve is a sheer cliff.

Level Design Score: 0

Level Design Notes:

Again, the difficulty ramps up immediately. Good luck clearing level 3.

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

Love the idea. Presentation is simultaneously bare bones and bizarre. Other than the gameboard all you get is a purple background of a drop hitting an ocean and causing a droplet to pop back upward. Between levels this screen animates in the same way each time. Reminds me of a European metal band cover art.

Art Style Score: 3

Art Style Notes:

The screen is isometric from a very low profile view. It's easy to see where the ball is going. Overall the graphics do their job, although the background is purple and boring.

Audio Score: 4

Audio Notes:

Airy music plays continuously. It's got a nice beat and a surprising number of layers. I would listen to it outside the game. It's a chill soundtrack.

Overall Score: 26
