Light Crusader for Genesis

Light Crusader

Western-style Equinox

Genre: adventure - overhead

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1995

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

Avoids many of the pitfalls of isometric games but... it's still an isometric game that requires precision platforming. Movement feels nice with the d-pad matching the direction that you move. Feels much better than Landstalker. Still, the platforming is positively aggravating. Combat unfortunately does not feel great. The reach on your attack is very short and your jump is very high so it's hard to time the dive attack. More often than not you land on top of your enemies instead of hitting them. Includes a map and a very usable menu.

Level Design Score: 3

Level Design Notes:

There's a strong emphasis on puzzle solving. Combat isn't great so it was smart to focus on puzzles. It reminds me a lot of Equinox but just not as good.

Theme Score: 3

Theme Notes:

It's your typical Western RPG setup with a blonde haired knight tasked with saving people from a dungeon. There are a whole bunch of NPCs who fill you in on the details of your mission, so it's compelling in that regard.

Art Style Score: 4

Art Style Notes:

I don't care for the western-style sprites but the world is very well drawn. The town and elements within each room again are very well drawn. Unfortunately, like most dungeon crawlers, there's precious little color to the world so it feels very drab.

Audio Score: 5

Audio Notes:

The music and sound effects are easily the highlight of this game. The music is all very atmospheric and enjoyable. It's not light-hearted as your dungeon crawling but it makes you feel like you're inside an 80's fantasy action flick. Great stuff
