Magic Boy
Bubble Bobble BoyGenre: action - platform
Publisher: JVC
Year: 1993
System: SNES
Gameplay Score: 4
Gameplay Notes:
Plays like Bubble Bobble. Levels are a vertical shaft. Objective appears to be killing all enemies. Really weird mechanics - shoot to stun an enemy, they attach to your when touched, you must discard the attached baddie via X - if you wait too long they kill you Shoot question block tiles to cause fruit to fly out and land randomly, again like Bubble Bobble. Screen wraps on some levels Whole bunch of collectables that do who-knows-what Controls really well Fun little game
Level Design Score: 4
Level Design Notes:
Screen-based levels. Just a tall shaft. Platforming is interesting as you (and enemies) can jump up through anything. Platforms only have top surfaces.
Theme Score: 2
Theme Notes:
You're a cartoony fat blonde kid with a wand and you're shooting bizarre mutant...things. You wouldn't look at this and say, wow that looks cool.
Art Style Score: 3
Art Style Notes:
Simple graphics that are well drawn. Pretty stupid looking character models though
Audio Score: 2
Audio Notes:
I tried to like the music but it's not catchy. Once I realized this is a Bubble Bobble clone all I could think is how disappointing the music was compared to Bobble's theme Sound effects are annoying
Overall Score: 72
