MLBPA Sports Talk Baseball

Stephen Hawking on the mic

Genre: sports - baseball

Publisher: Sega

Year: 1992

System: Genesis

Gameplay Score: 2

Gameplay Notes:

The gameplay is reminiscent of NES and TurboGrafx-16 baseball games. It's fairly simple in the pitching and the fielding, although I felt like it was hard to throw to first base by holding right, I would almost always through to second base. Hitting is not fun. I played most of the game and only got a couple of hits. Very frustrating. I don't know what I was doing wrong. On the other hand, the computer had no problem getting hit after hit against me so the difficulty is too high

Level Design Score: 2

Level Design Notes:

Exhibition and playoff modes

Theme Score: 2

Theme Notes:

MLBPA license but no MLB

Art Style Score: 2

Art Style Notes:

Everything about the game looks early gen but it has a decent frame rate.

Audio Score: 2

Audio Notes:

The gimmick of this game is commentary which was novel back in 1991. Unfortunately it's poorly implemented and sounds like Stephen Hawking providing play-by-play. The commentary gets hopelessly behind and announces things that happen quite a while back. It's unintentionally hilarious. Aside from that, the sound is actually pretty good with crowd noise ebbing and flowing like you would expect in a baseball game and not just a constant hum like in the EA games. However, there's still too much noise for my taste.
